Great thead, Q! However, Duran didn't become inconsistent until he was past it and was fighting 19 pounds above his optimal weight. He was 70 2 when his prime ended. That is pretty consistent.
Many fighters of the 80s come to mind. Page was like the second coming of Jersey Joe Walcott, only slicker, stronger, and better, just to fall behind in the end. He went from being top 3 or 4 among his fellow heavyweights to becoming a hard fight for up and comers, and nothing more than that.
My 2nd favorite fighter ever.............James Toney. James Toney is the most inconsistent elite modern fighter ever. James Toney had enough ability that he really could've been real close to a top 20 ATG. P4P #1 and a second later, barely sliding past a journeyman that's about to retire. It's actually been frustrating to be a Toney fan over the years, knowing that at his most dedicated, there's probably no one that can beat him at his absolute best, but wondering if we're only gonna get 40% of that on the night we watch him. Toney really could've been a 5 weight world champion (MW, SMW, LHW, CW, HW), hell even being inconsistent and morbidly obese he managed to "really" snatch belts in 4 weight classes.
