I remember that exact issue and reading those ratings at the time. Looking back I think Dokes was too high and Berbick and Witherspoon too low

This was not easy. The dearth of quality heavyweights in the 1980s left me struggling to find reasons to put people in the top ten list. I based this list strictly on their fights at heavyweight in the 1980s. Ya know, if this question had been to rank the top ten heavyweights who fought at any time during the 1980s, this would have been quite a list. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Bowe and Lewis all would have qualified.

    1. Larry Holmes
    2. Mike Tyson
    3. Tim Witherspoon
    4. Michael Spinks
    5. Mike Weaver
    6. Buster Douglas
    7. Pinklon Thomas
    8. Evander Holyfield
    9. Tony Tucker
    10. James "Bonecrusher" Smith

So, Holmes' reign over half the decade doesn't make no.3?

    This must be April Fool's.

Did Tyson actually beat a fighter the caliber of Ken Norton during his reign? Berbick, Tucker, Bruno, faded Thomas, Biggs, Tubbs, light heavy Spinks...do any of them measure up to Ken? I'm honestly curious, just asking.

That's true and part of what made this list so difficult. Once you get past the first four or five a lot of the Alphabet Boys beat each other. Tucker, Tubbs, Page, Smith, Biggs, Williams and others could not really sustain any kind of consistent dominance over the rest.

Lol at Holmes minus Norton, Shavers I and Weaver being put ahead of Tyson.

Right after the winners podium, the steps really become terribly thin nuances.
