Who were the top ten heavyweights of Jack Dempsey's title Reign from 1919 to 1926?

    I would say:

    1 ) Tunney
    2 ) Wills
    3 ) Greb
    4 ) Gibbons
    5 ) Miske
    6 ) Fulton
    7 ) Langford
    8 ) Firpo
    9 ) Brennan
    10 ) Godfrey

I might tinker with this list a bit.

Hm, the only thing I´m sure about is that Wills and Greb are one and two. Langford I think was too far done to be included.

While past his best Langford had some solid wins from 1919-1926. I think Tunney should be placed above Greb.

It depends 'what year' but Kid Norfolk should be there he beat Miske and Greb, Tate should be there. Sharkey too. McVea and Jeanette were on their way out but maybe had as much left as Langford

The years are 1919-1926 so pick the best active fighters during this time line when Dempsey was champion. If someone is too old or too inexperienced regardless of their past or future accomplishments, they should not rate. Tate to me would not make the cut.

Perhaps Johnson could squeeze in? Sharkey, I don´t think so, he rose towards the end but was he already far enough to sneak in? Tunney shouldn´t be ranked above Greb, Greb did more work and for a longer time.

    1. Wills
    2. Greb
    3. Tunne
    4. Gibbons

are clear IMO. Afterwards it get´s a bit harder. Fulton, Firpo, Miske must be in there. Than there are some fighters that could be like Johnson, Langford, Sharkey, Godfrey, Brennan, Norfolk (?), Loughran (?), Delaney (?).

Wills above Tunney, Brennan above Langford and Firpo, decent list I think.

Thinking about this the other day.

In reality dempsey's reign was 19-23. During his hollywood years it's impossible to consider him an active boxer. He fought the best heavyweight in 26-27 being tunney and sharkey.

During 19-23 i'm not overly sure he could have improved his resume too much apart from wills and greb. H2h i'm not sure he'd have received too much credit destroying the middleweight champ but I wouldn't argue too much against it.

Colour line aside is it fair to say dempsey fought the best white heavyweights between 19 and 23? Off the top of my head i'd say yes but maybe someone could prove me wrong? I dunno.

Greb and Wills should clearly be above Tunney. Tunney didnt show any superiority over Greb until 1925 and didnt go Dempsey hunting until then either. Wills was right at the top from the beginning to the end of Dempsey's reign. Id also probably place Gibbons ahead of Tunney seeing as how Tunney avoided him for a significant period of the time frame. Id also put Brennan above Fulton and bump Langford all together.

You could make the case for chopping him off based upon the footage. But you could include him based upon those results, yeah.

It seems fair to say that jack beat a lot of the top white heavyweights during his prime.
