Forgive me, but I *think* what I said was based on evidence and logic. Just because he isn't "hyped" as physically strong or just because he has other great qualities that overshadow his physical strength - doesn't mean he isn't very strong. Whereas with Firpo all we ever focus on his punching power and his strength because there was nothing else to focus on so it amplifies our vision of his strength.

Rocky Marciano didn't have that image either, was considered small, "only 185 lb" but he was a very strong guy indeed. I'm not saying Rocky is the strongest but I'm saying that physical strength isn't always based on image or hype. The same holds for Muhammad Ali - probably the most physically strong heavyweight ever or top 5 no doubt. He certainly showed it in the ring. By any means, it is not a far stretch to choose Ali.

Oh give it a ****ing rest, Jesus. You seriously think he's stronger than someone like Tye Fields? Nicolay Valuev? You don't even know he was stronger than Foreman or Liston. So he hung on their heads... That just means he had a good grip. It's not like Ali was bulling forward and shoving them backwards is it? Henry Armstrong - now there's a man who was strong, and he proved it by shoving back fighters who outweighed him and giving them hell for a full fifteen rounds. Ali was simply using leverage and intelligence to make them use their own strength against his opponents. I'll tell you why Foreman couldn't shove Ali backwards - he was sitting on the ropes, he couldn't be pushed back any further. Ali was strong, all fighters are strong, but he was nowhere near the strongest of all time. He was just a clever, illegal clincher.

Herbie Hide at cruiserweight. He was still a powerhouse when he won a world title at heavy. Underrated.

Also this isnt populist but Naseem Hamed at feather.

Middleweight and super-middle Nigel Benn should get a look in.

Heavy Foreman Liston or Dempsey you can't go wrong with those

    Manassa,

Not sure where you are coming from here. Ali was clearly very strong as he manhandled some exceptional opponents, pushing and wrestling as well as leaning. A number of opponents commented on his strength in the clinch.

Valuev? What are you basing his strength on. His opponents couldnt move him around but surely thats because he a huge deadweight.

I dont believe a sack of potatoes to be strong?!

It's his sheer size. Like it or lump it, in general, big men are strong men.

I would put Michael Carbajal on the list. You don't always see awesome power like that at those lowest weights.

For sheer strength I'd say the strongest fighter for their weight division was very likely Walcott. There is no footage but the fight reports are evidence enough, as well as pictures of Walcott who looked like he was on steroids way back at the turning of the 20th century.

Tiger at middle I think is quite clear, although LaMotta and Fullmer are up there.

Whatever his shortcomings, Khaosai Galaxy always looked to be insanely strong for 115, he looks like a tank.

Henry Armstrong constantly pushing back Caferino Garcia is quite an impressive display of physical strength.

I have to agree with Hoboblin here. Ali was very strong and possibly stronger than Foreman in the clinches. He clinched when he wanted to and controlled his opponents without much difficulty.

Lewis a little overrated in this thread.

Foreman, Liston etc much stronger men naturally.

Leftfield pick: Hasim Rahman is a very strong man naturally, could bench 450lbs - probably a world class strength athlete if he trained for it. Remember him shoving LL across the room in comical fashion?

i totally agree with this thread.

i always thought of ali as the antithesis of a sheerly powerfull heavyweight.

ali was such a defining boxer to me because he was graceful, smart and originally hard to hit. i always thought of him as the fighter that proved that you dident have to be strong to be possibly the greatest fighter of all time.

Do not agree with point #1. Lewis was very, very strong. Also, Carnera, Willard... In regards to Rahman, 450 is very good - not great by pure lifting standards- but I agree he was very strong.

But Christ Almighty little Terry Norris benched 325, so he is my pick at 154. Also, and I can't believe no one mentioned this...

KHAOSAI GALAXY... possibly the strongest pound for pound fighter EVER!
