Miguel Diaz is an elite cut man. He was also instrumental as an assistant trainer for fighters like Erik Morales, Ricardo Torres, Juan Diaz and Oscar Larios.

Problem is he's never been the head guy for any of those fighters...so while Miguel may be good at handling the cuts and keeping Cotto calm, It seems strange to hand a mega fight like this to a relative big fight novice like Diaz.

In Puerto Rico today the local newspaper is reporting that probably Diaz (as an interim trainer) will take the job because of his availabiity in comparison to Mayweather Sr. Roach & Steward. After the fight they will select who will be the permanent trainer...

I hope it's not Stewart. I believe that Stewart is past his prime as a trainer and I don't know... I rather see Mayweather Sr. or Roach to be honest. Although my favorite trainer for Cotto would be Richardson but I know that it will never happen since he trains SSM.

I know... This is the wrong fight to make this type of changes. :patsch Let's see... They would have 2 months before the fight to come together. But as Cotto's fan, I am worried and hoping for the best.

To be fair to Miguel Diaz, he's been in the Cotto camp for a while so there's little to no transition for the Clottey fight. If they're looking for an easy transition, Diaz is probably the right guy on short notice. It's not like he's a complete waste either...

That said we know NOTHING about Diaz as a trainer. It's like placing your bets on a rookie QB to win the super bowl.

it isn't a complete waste of time but it is usually Evangelista who comes up with the gameplans and the tactics, usually Diaz and the others follow Evangelista's orders.

I agree. I do agree. I'm just saying that if people feel Diaz is unqualified then they're off. Guy has paid his dues and deserves this opportunity.

Just don't know how well he fits at this point.

The Manny Steward being past it argument isn't new. I don't know why you guys are shocked by it.

A lot of people feel that way especially with how his top fighters outside of Wlad fizzled in their big fights. I don't think Steward is past it but he certainly isn't shining so bright nowadays.

It doesn't matter who trains him. Clotty is gonna beat him worse than Margo did.

Ya know it doesn't make much sense to me either. Maybe it's like how a manager in baseball or football has the game pass him by and refuses to adapt to the newer strategies of the game?

I don't know about Steward being past his "trainer" prime..

... Many many trainers did +- their best work late in their life...Dundee with SRL, Arcel with Duran, Futch with Bowe...It's maybe because they had better talents back then.

But I also don't see Manny training Cotto... I think Roach would be good but he has too many fighters..

Mustafa Muhammad and Dan Birmingham would be just perfect.
