Two unified champions (Calzaghe and Haye) have moved up in weight leaving power vacumes in their former divisions. I am interested to know who if anybody the classic forum think could establish themself as a dominant champion in those divisions. Predict how history will blaze its path.
At Cruiser weight, I think Alexander Alexeev will be the #1 guy in 1-2 years. Alexeev is a very talented southpaw. The skills, power, and speed are there, but what might set him apart from a mere alphabet champion is good combinations ability, good counterpunching, good body punching, and pinpoint striking ability. Alexevv has pound for pound type of skills and can throw every punch in the book. The world amateur champ at 91k is 15-0, with 14 Ko’s. While he has not fought a top ten cruiserweight yet, I’ll go out on a limb and say he is the real deal, much like I felt Wad Klitschko would be the #1 guy well before he first meet Chris Byrd. I think Alexeev has enough ability to rate as one of the best cruisers of all time. It’s a shame boxing doesn’t hype one of their best talents. Super Middle weight is hard to figure. Mikkel Kessler is still the best in the division. He is still young enough to be the #1 gun for a while, but he has to re-bound from the Calzaghe. If Pavlik moves up in weight, the divison might be his.
as of yet calzaghe has made no noise about leaving the SMW division for good. if a calzaghe-pavlik fight comes off in november it will no doubt be for joe's trinkets at 168.
