Im rooting for Bernard, only because i want him to realise his dream, beat Stevenson, unify the titles, cement his legacy and then retire.

But let's not forget Hopkins' two light heavyweight belts to gain: WBA and IBF.

If he has 3 world titles, Kovalev will greatly elevate his status in the boxing world. :thumbsup

No doubt! The ironic thing is that he never did give the REAL reason he wants Hopkins to win.:yep

True but he just may get treated like a villian by the U.S. boxing infrastructure. They could easily hold a grudge against him and make his life difficult in the future.

Yes, I'm sure they will. Already this week, Max Kellerman has been making negative comments about him. Kellerman says "he's not that good, just a puncher".

The people like Max who've bashed and discredited the Klitschkos over the years will make Kovalev a primary target if he beats Hopkins.

Do you have a link to that? There is this interview:

“It’s good not to be in Kovalev’s head. If he starts thinking with Bernard Hopkins, as [Kovalev’s trainer] John David Jackson pointed out, it’s a wrap. Kovalev just has to fight and attack,” Kellerman said.

I assume there must be something else.

I was referring to Kellerman's comments on Lampley's show this week. He said that while GGG is a special fighter, Kovalev is not, he's just a puncher.

In the final press conference yesterday Hopkins finished up with something to the tune of "send the atheist back to the hole they belong". WTF was that all about? Was he talking about Kovalev? Also went all nuts saying Allah made his enemies drop dead, and that he is protected in the ring by a higher power.

Ok Bernard whatever you say dude, but thanks for that little outburst now I won't feel bad watching you get destroyed by Kovalev.

I just watched that clip and unless I missed it he didn't say that Kovalev was not special, he only said that he thinks it best for Kovalev to try and outfight/outpunch not outbox Bernard. And let's be honest, it wouldn't even really make sense for Kovalev to try and turn it into a boxing match against Hopkins since it would negate his own advantages.

In any event, Kellerman is a pundit and he's paid to voice his opinions. Even if he did say "Kovalev is just a puncher" that's hardly a stinging critique.

And it's not like he's anti Eastern European (since that seems to be a concern to some on this board) since in the same breath he'll praise GGG as one if not the best at MW right now.

He praises GGG, but in that same interview he said Golovkin's not a Russian.

Max doesn't like Kovalev, although there's not much he can say against him when he's knocking people out in the early rounds. He will be going on about how much bigger Kovalev is than Hopkins even though they are about the same size.

Max never liked Klitschko, Hatton, Calzaghe, Pavlik, etc. He absolutely loved Pernell Whitaker though.
