I'm sure he's not and neither are Russians who are known to love, respect and admire Tyson and RJJ.

    Kova.

If Hopkins would be able to beat Kovalev then the haters would be right and it is a very weak era. I would still be happy and in awe for B-Hop if he somehow upsets the odds again, but in this case he shouldn't be able to.

It should look like an old man getting mugged in some alley, and not like the old man beating up the guy that tries to mug him...
In the alley I would root for Hopkins, in the ring I'll root for Kovalev.

Oh I know, and I have quite a few Russian friends. Literally all of them and their relatives and friends praise Tyson and RJJ whenever Boxing is brought up. Even Russian trainers always mention those two fighters, especially RJJ.

Well that is just your opinion. "Negro" is just a word. It is the social context in how it was used makes the difference on whether it is acceptable or not.
Russia doesn't have the disgusting history of slavery and oppression of Blacks that the US does, so naturally they wouldn't see the word as offensive as it is in America.

African Americans in general called themselves Negroes until not too long ago and there was nothing wrong with the word then. The idea that people in other countries are supposed to follow "what's in" with black Americans and stop using the word "Negro" when they did is ridiculous.

No .. you're missing out on context and transliteration. Actually (while I should probably be punished for speaking on behalf a community I don't belong to), if the Russians are anything like the Greeks they're largely indifferent to the plight of US blacks, or to their preferred nomenclature, in the same way that US blacks probably don't give a damn about the plight of the Greek population who are currently being royally f#kked over.

You're forgetting that black enslavement and the subsequent civil rights movement are unique to the US (and to a lesser extent France and the UK) - you really can't imagine that countries who were never involved in the Black slave trade and don't have any significant population of descendents of the enslaved could be expected to display the same linguistic sensitivity to US blacks as the US population is (rightly) expected to.

I don't speak Russian so I don't know but I read an interview with Beibut Shumenov which had this in it.

RingTV.com: What are your thoughts Sergey Kovalev's comments about African Americans? Were they controversial or not in nature, due to the Russian language? In other words, what was your interpretation of what Kovalev actually said?

Shumenov: I was shocked when I heard about his racist comments that he said in reference about African Americans. There was no misinterpretation or lost in Russian-to-English translation of what he said.

He will have to live with the derogatory words that he said in print and video. A lot of my team are African Americans, and they are more than members of my team, they are family to me. They have my back and I have theirs, and I have zero respect for racist views of any kind.

Apologies but this is a well written and articulate piece of nonsense. It's 2014 if the Olympics were to be held in Moscow next week are suggesting that they would be describing the black athletes as Negros. I think it's universally excepted that words like that are offensive in 2014.

Really? I guess you think that because Shumenov comes from the ex-Soviets and his name ends in a 'v' then he should have Kovalevs back? That just kinda goes to illustrate my point. The gap in cultural awareness and standards are just vast.

So, I guess you're unaware that the widespread attention brought to Kovalevs comments (which had previously gone completely unregarded for about 2 years) came immediately after Kovalev suggested that Shumenov was a paper titlist?

FWIW as far as I'm able to establish the chain of events Kovalev orginally did call Grover Young a 'n*gger' and probably meant it offensively following Young deliberately cheating him out of a KO victory. Acceptable - no! Understandable? Hell, if you've never called anyone something you shouldn't have when you've been mad you probably deserve a medal.

As has been pointed out previously, perhaps the best people to ask about Sergeis racism are his black friends however.

I'm rooting for Kovalev... I've never been a big fan of Hopkins. I respect him, but he has one of the most boring styles of all time imo. Kovalev on the other hand I really enjoy watching - he's a monster and is great for boxing.

I will root for Bernard Hopkins to win this fight. Hopkins winning this fight would cement his legacy as the best boxer of the last 25 years.
