Primo by ko. He was bigger, stronger, better footwork, and had equal power. Tate's chin was no better, perhaps worse.

How was Tate better in "every departament"? Uh? Carnera was bigger, stronger, and probably had better stamina

I think John Tate has been really shorted over the years. He took a severe KO, which he never recovered from. It has happened many times over the years to some outstanding fighters who had excellent jaws before the KO and were never the same. It happened to Bramble against Rosario, it happened to Curry against McCallum, it happened to O'Grady against Ganigan and it happened to Cuevas against Hearns. The cerebral impact of the immovable object against the irresistible force was profound. Tate was outstanding at the time. For a big man he could box, punch, 15 rounds was no problem and he didn't have a bad jaw at all. He was in against big bangers like Coetzee, Knoetzee, Mercado and Weaver for 14 1/2 rounds. I think he was stunned once in the 12th against Weaver, but simply regrouped without an issue. But that one left hook in the 15th pulled the plug on his career. Before that there was a lot of talk of a Holmes-Tate unification. And believe me, the way he had been looking in his last few fights, this would have been a viable hotly-contested bout. Regarding Tate-Carnera, please! Prime for prime Tate was miles beyond Primo.

Solid post. Tate was a very good fighter before being poleaxed.

For a man his size Tate could not punch a bit. Quarry said as much as commentator on one of his fights. Compare his power to other men his size like Lyle, Forema, Williams, and even Mac Foster and he comes up way short.

Foreman, Williams, and Foster were of a clubbing-like variety of a puncher. That was not Tate. Nor was he a buzzsaw type puncher like Frazier. He was a precision-type puncher capable of finding openings. Tate could box as he did against Coetzee and counter-punch like he did against Knoetzee. But when he wanted to turn it on it was fast and again, precision-like as he did vs. Bobick and the undefeated Mercado and moreso like he did to the rock-jawed Raul Gorosito who had never been down in his career. Just a different kind of puncher who could see the opening and pull the trigger. Sort of like a Zora Folley and Eddie Machen type of puncher ****ering for that opening and when they see it, they deliver it fast and hard.

Tate was very good for a short while

He should easily outbox Primo for a clear decision

    Lyle would have crippled Tate.

No ko demon , but a better puncher than Carnera who was stopped 14 times and how many other times would he have been stopped if the fights were kosher?
Two of Tate's defeats were to big punchers Coetzee and Weaver, both would have stopped Primo.
