I'm sorry, but that's ignorant. Leonard had more power than Jones at 160? You really believe that? And many of your Jones criticisms are based on his recent (i.e., shot) fights. Hard to believe any Jones fans would reference today's version and not the one from the 90s.
Technically wise Ray was slightly better. In terms of P4P skills they are the same level fighter. Both are H2H number 1's in their respective weight classes. And outside of his best weight class, Leonard gets schooled
RJJ, too big, too strong, too elusive....speed is probably the only even keel in that match, and I'd still give RJJ the edge their
I can not agree with you here. Jones at Middleweight was just as powerful and faster than any of the great fighters you mentioned. What are you talking about when the going gets tough against Jones he loses? You mean when he is in or above his mid 30's....... You must, because those are the only times he has really lost. You need to watch more Roy Jones footage.
Leonard fought Duran twice and did not go down. He fought Hearns and was only knocked down in the fight when he was passed his best. He fought Hagler. Roy did not fight ANYONE the caliber of these fighters. SRL had a very good Chin. Now lets look at Roy who got his Glass Jaw shattered in 2 by Tarver and the brutally Koed for 6 minutes by Glen Johnson who is feather fisted. Jones was not as 'shot' as you say he was in these fights. Was he passed his best? Probably. But he was far from being 'shot'. Also he was completely embarrassed by feather fisted Calzaghe and sparked out in 2 minutes by Danny Green. SRL was never stopped like that. Ever. It is funny how people on here said Jones was 'shot' after the Tarver and Johnson losses then after Trinidad, and Sheika he was not shot then after Green he was back to being shot. See a pattern here? Jones is only 'shot' according to his nuthuggers and followers on here when he loses. When he wins it is all fine and dandy. BTW, you are not a Jones nuthugger you are one of the few realistic Jones fans on this forum.
Its funny you give Leonard the benefit of the doubt that he was passed his best.... You dont think a 34, 35, and 40 year old Jones is past his best?
that was a reasonable post. from rico. when he first wrote it. why did you just copy and paste his response?
I guess Roy Jones being knocked out in his mid 30's at LHW means he can't take good power at Middleweight in his prime.
don't worry. it's not even his, it's rico's. rico and i are likely to respectfully disagree on jones chin
A Roy Jones, Jr. vs. Sugar Ray Leonard middleweight dream fight would make any fight fan salivate. But to imagine such a fight would be to consider (despite Jones's power advantage) the obvious fact that both Jones and Leonard are extremely similar. Max Kellerman commented (and rightfully) that Jones was a harder-punching version of the second Sugarman. But at middleweight, Jones would have been entering Leonard's territory. Two facts come to mind when talking about Leonard at middleweight: (1) he defeated the great Marvin Hagler at this weight (albeit to many, controversially); and (2) Leonard fought far better opponents at this weight level than Jones did. In truth, Leonard would have been able to disarm the more powerful Jones with ring smarts and saavy. No knockouts, but an easy Leonard win is not beyond any realm of possibility.
Rico and I have fought it out many times... Jones' punch resistance went with his reflexes, that is clear to me. I have seen him take harder punches earlier in his career than the ones he was knocked out with later. Ruiz hit him harder than Johnson or Green did, Tarver really belted him perfect though, and don't find that suspect for a glass jaw.
