Duddy by late TKO. He has shown signs of improvement under Pat Burns, will carry too much power for Chavez at light-middle, and has an excellent chin.

John Duddy and I would love to see this fight happen. I am going to go see Duddy fight this April in Newark. Always an entertaining fighter and very nice guy when I met him at the Adamek vs banks fight.
what has duddy done to earn all this praise? i've never, no matter how many times i've seen him fight in person or on television, what the big deal is about this guy. perhaps, i am the only one who thought duddy has always looked too heavy, weighted down, sloppy, uncoordinated, inarticulate when throwing combinations, face-first and a bit undersized at middleweight. duddy, to me looks no more a natural middle than jcc jr. does right now. the only difference is that jr. will probably actually grow into the division, whereas duddy will continue to weigh in at or around 157-pounds and come into the fight no heavier, as he has throughout his career. the guy is a natural junior middle. he's listed at 5'11" despite the fact that he is more like 5'9"-5'10" and his performances have been notably uneven (the worst, of course, being the simchit hometown decision) ever since yori boy campas gave him a fierce gut check a few years ago. the fact that he has become one of the premier bleeders in the game certainly isn't helping. duddy is a limited fighter, making strides with a new team after splitting with irish ropes, but a limited fighter, a popular banger who will always move tickets, even if he doesn't move the pound-for-pound rankings. jcc jr. is not half the fighter his father was...that much is clear. however, not half the fighter his father was will still probably end up a divisional world titleholder, chavez has made progress slowly because his level of opposition has been brought up so dreadfully slowly because no one wanted to rock the cash cradle. despite those efforts to coddle him, he probably ought to have lost the first fight to vanda, sick or not, and both fights with carlos molina. despite that he keeps inching forward and looks quicker, slicker and more in control of the momentum of his shots in recent fights. he is getting physically stronger and more balanced all the time. jr., who actually is as tall as listed, would probably be very able to exploit the reach advantage behind the jab and left hook (not half as good as his dad's, but even a quarter of that hook does critical damage). if jr. keeps the fight at center ring and doesn't get sloppy trying to wing shots, keeps moving around the relatively stationary duddy, i think he cruises to an easy unanimous decision.
I'm not sure anyone is giving Duddy all that much praise. He is a tough guy and a good puncher who always comes to fight. His wins over Eastman, Smitchet, Bonsante, Vanda and Campas show he is above a journeyman and maybe even a fringe contender at 160. I agree with you that he should consider fighting at 154. But, as shown by their fights with Vanda, Jon is a notch ahead of JCC jr at 154 or 160. Duddy would just be too big and strong for Chavez at this point.
I agree that Duddy is a natural light middleweight but you are underestimating him big time here. He was a very handy boxer as an amateur but lost his way a little when he turned pro, he fights too much for the fans and forgets his boxing skills, it's not a case that he dosen't have the skills. He is getting back to his boxing now and he totally outboxed Vanda (apart from a lapse of concentration in the 10th round). He can fight and he can box, he has decent power and a rock solid chin, now that is more than most in his devision have and definately more than Chavez jr has.
fair enough. i'll keep an open mind and keep an eye on him as he rolls toward, and i assume right over, billy lyell and gets to the next test.
