From 1929 to Louis rematch, he has a record of 14-3-1 and he avenged Hamas loss, lost to Max Baer and lost to Sharkey a terrible decision (he clearly won that fight). Also, his draw with Paulino in Spain was a gift for Uzcudun and Schmeling beat him twice the other two times.
I wouldn't call that spotty, especially given the level of competition he faced.

He was definitely the best, who could compete with him?

Watch footage, his right hand is very accurate, powerful and quick. Well timed and versatile. What is not to like?
He also had very good jab and nice head movement.

Baer wasn't trained for the Braddock fight and was green when he fought Loughran.Stribling wasn't the boxer Tommy was.
