He ended his career 87/3/9. All losses and draws from his early career. Undefeated in 70s. Defended his title 14 times against 11 opponents. Definitely one of the best middleweights ever.

He was very, very, very much legit. One of the most complete ring generals ever, with a (literally) murderous stare and some horrid, heavy combinations. He got in with multiple great fighters, and took them apart piece by piece. He just took away their best attributes, and then beat the **** out of them.

He had exactly 100 fights. 3 losses, 9 draws and one no contest, off the top of my head. His wins over Griffith 2x, Valdez 2x, Nino 2x, Briscoe and Napoles make a great résumé and having a **** load of title defences is a bonus too.

RJJ wins. No doubt about it. Nobody can beat RJJ at his prime.

    100 pro fights is ridiculous.

The way you describe him he sounds like my kind of fighter.

I'm definitely going to look him up and watch a few highlight reels, as I feel bad for not including him now.

Do you reckon he would be the guy to beat in this fantasy super series?

Sounds like it would have been a right tear up.

If you had to bet your house who would pick and how would they win?

I don't know how he didn't make more of an impression on me.

I did vaguely know of his record, but I hadnt really considered him for my list.

It's one of those where you always think "oh, I forgot about so and so" after you finish the list.

I voted for Jones Jr but I can see him getting knocked out by Hagler or GGG, who also have a legit chance
Prime (and most importantly: in shape) Toney also has a good chance though I don't think he would beat Roy

If you think Monzon's record is ridiculous, wait till you hear about some guys from even further back. Robinson, Langford, Greb, etc; they're all even more mental.

I've always enjoyed his fights with Valdez and Napoles, although they're not really his best performances. At his absolute best (Griffith I) he was nigh on unbeatable at the weight. You just couldn't get anywhere with him. A bit like a combo of Wlad's style with Vitali's attributes. The only issue I take with watching him at his best, is that he's so unfathomably in control that he becomes boring. Just nothing happens. Highlights don't really do him justice because of it. It's hard to see his ring generalship, the chin and ring IQ just from short clips.

I don't think he'd win this one, no. I think he'd get to the semi finals though, that's for sure. I think Jones' speed and counters are too much for him. Monzon would have to take the lead vs Jones, because Jones would get off first in every exchange. Sure, timing beats speed, but it's quite hard to time someone with as "blank' a rhythm as Jones.

Monzon was about four inches taller than Hagler. Hagler loved tall fighters, and I think Hagler would let the beast out the cage for Monzon. Hagler had tunnel vision set on Monzon, in a similar way to how Holyfield had Tyson. Monzon was the complete man in the division while Hagler was coming through. I think the way Hagler ran through tall fighters with that intensive bullishness and the constant multi-stance ring-cutting is awful for Monzon, and the mental approach that Hagler would take to this fight would bring out an unholy performance IMO. Plus, Monzon would have a very hard time dealing with a southpaw like Hagler for his first time.

I wouldn't bet my house

Picking either one of Monzon or Hagler is reasonable in my view.

If I had a gun to my head I'd probably take Monzon on points. Hagler could be a bit tentative when facing another great boxer and if he was then I think Monzon picks him apart from range.

Of course there's another argument to be made which is that Monzon beat some ATG's but that they were generally coming up in weight. Hagler is the complete package and a legit MW. He's got the chin to take Monzon's shots and he's got some trcks of his own that Carlos may not have seen.

I suggest watching The Shotgun yourself. Monzon seems a bit basic at first, but then, a lot of guys that use footwork and a rangey jab to control their opponents do at first glance. Wlad Klitschko has been called robotic and Golovkin has been called "no special effects". But watch a bit of Monzon and you realise that he has a system that he fights to, that its very effective and that he's a lot more clever than he seems at first blush.

Hagler is better to watch but Monzon may be just better.

    Nice interesting tourney!

As other's have said Monzon should deffo be there, but then what about Greb / SRR etc, it's a pretty good list in terms of the last 30-40 years.

I have to go with RJJ - at his 'Superman' peak has was as untouchable as any boxer i've seen.

I LOVE Hagler, but he did lose to Leonard (albeit controversially), so could see Roy being well ahead up to rounds 11/12.

The big question in that matchup is whether it's 12 or 15 rounds; Hagler could well get to Roy 13-15, like he did to turn around his narrow win over Duran.

It would be something to see, reagrdless of who prevailed!

A lot of people have overlooked Toney in this thread.

The consensus so far is it's between Hagler and Roy Jones jnr, with GGG next.

Hardly anyone has mentioned LaMotta, or Benn.

I agree you could make a case that they aren't ATG best ever quality, and might come unstuck against those top tier guys.

But, we are talking about these guys in their prime, and a hungry, focused, prime LaMotta is a handful for any middleweight.

I'm setting aside an hour tonight to go through Monzon's career.

Any recommendations for his best fights?

Personally, I think it has to be 15 rounds.

That most definitely tips it towards Hagler who is proven over 15.

Obviously anything after 12 is uncharted territory for JOnes/GGG/Benn etc
