Marvin had the reach and the speed to possibly have knocked out Roy.

GG has a small reach, little head movement and is slower.

    He’s very hittable.

I don’t see how he’d have had the opportunity to have knocked Roy out.

Do you think there is any merit in the idea that GGG is so durable, and able to take big shots and still come forward, that he might be able to weather the storm and as the fight progresses find a way to get to them?

if not by walking them down per se, by virtue of the fact he will keep coming forward constantly until he connects.

After all, it's very rare to see GGG going backwards, isn't it?

    I don’t think so.

I think it would have had a cautious U/D for Roy written all over it.

Continuously walking forward and not being deterred wouldn’t have meant that he’d have connected with something big at some point. Not from his angles.

Again, he has a small reach.

Roy was so elusive, with his great reflexes and his unorthodox style.

Marvin had fast hands, the southpaw stance and a 75” reach.

If Marvin had really gone after him, he could have found success.

GG is a great fighter, but very different.

Watching his fights against the likes of Jacobs and Canelo don’t give me the impression that he’d have found Roy’s chin.

Unfortunately, he never fought any elite fighters in his prime, and people will claim that he was faded against the likes of Jacobs and Canelo. And that’s fair enough. But for me, there’s just no evidence available to have favoured him over Roy at 25.

Yes, he has a great number of title defences, but IMHO, there’s many great MW’s who could have followed and replicated his same timeline. Although he’s great, to me, he only did what he was supposed to do.

If you watch his fights, and then you watch Roy easily knock out Malinga and Tate, before then fighting Toney just 6 months later, it’s extremely difficult to see how GG would have beaten Roy.

I must admit, you make a persuasive argument.

Hagler and Jones are so good they make even world level fighters look average.

However, I have a feeling that GGG could have risen to the challenge.

Don't forget, we are talking about the absolute best version of all these fighters - like they are frozen in time at the peak of their powers.

I just wonder how GGG would be viewed if he had gotten into it with the bigger names at 160 5 years earlier.

I've always found it strange that GGG never moved up, at least to 168.

There have been well known guys at 160 move up, including his contemporaries like Canelo, Eubank jnr, Saunders.

Do you think there is any credence to the allegations GGG didnt move up because he was something of a weight bully and moving up to 168 potentially puts him in with guys doing the same thing who are closer to 175+ and he'd lose that advantage he had at 160 against genuine 160lbers?

Me too, I've never blocked anyone on any platform since I started posting stuff online.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by "death list"?

I mean, I know what it sounds like but I'm confused by the context in relation to the forum.

Every now an then people get to big for their boots, so I pop em on the list, 24 hr thingy, it gets left in the tray unless there’s another mishap, then it gets passed on. That’s all I can say mate. Just don’t make it to the list ffs

I think he’d definitely have risen to the occasion. It’s just that he was too hittable with a small reach, whereas Roy was so elusive.

We know that he had the power to have taken Roy out, but he’d have needed the perfect opportunity to have landed it.

Roy fought plenty of technical fighters and guys who had power, but they didn’t find any sustained success until he’d started to slow down.

I can’t envisage a scenario where GG would have knocked out Roy. Roy wouldn’t have been there. His unorthodox style and his great speed would have kept him out of trouble.

With hindsight, GG probably should have moved up. But he was the perfect size for a MW. Perfect height, reach and frame. I don’t think he could have added a lot of mass and been as effective. He was just the perfect MW. But he couldn’t get the fights that would have given him a stronger resume. He was definitely avoided earlier in his career. I’m a big fan of BJS, but BJS openly admitted that he didn’t want to fight him, and he’s only moved up because he can no longer make the weight.

I do genuinely feel for GG. But then at the same time, I do think he’s overrated sometimes. Personally, I think that fights against Canelo and Jacobs etc, would always have played out the same, even if he’d have been in his prime. But of course, we’ll never know for sure.

Pretty much agree with all that.

I do think it's a shame GGG wasn't able to get in there with some of the big names so we could really judge his level.

Saunders saying that doesn't surprise me.

I've really started to come around to the idea Saunders is possibly the most overhyped and overrated fighter of the last few years.

His complete waste of a career, the ducking, the stupid stuff outside the ring, and the manner and (relative) ease with which Canelo was able to go through the gears and there was nothing he could do to stop him - it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

No fighter should ever publicly say they don't want to fight someone in that way.

Supreme confidence is how the elite make it.

If you doubt yourself how can you expect anyone else not to?

Like I say, maybe I'm being harsh on Saunders but I think he wasted his potential.

I always thought that Billy was the real deal, but it’s been so frustrating watching his career.

For one reason or another, he’s missed a huge part of his prime.

I actually thought he was doing well against Canelo until the injury.

Without that injury, it would have been a very interesting second half to the fight. But the injury was caused by a legit punch, so you can’t use it as excuse.

I can see him retiring after maybe 1-2 fights.

    He’s definitely wasted his talent.

Andre Dirrell was also a fighter who I liked to watch. And he wasted his potential too.

The rematch with Eubank jnr is an obvious domestic fight that could generate some British interest.

Though, Eubank is on the path to a title (he thinks at any rate) and is just deluded enough to think it is beneath him.

For that reason, I don't see it happening.

BJS is at the start of the downward slope of his career whilst Jnr is fast approaching the summit and is maybe 18 months to 2 years behind Saunders.

    What do you reckon?

Before I can decide, I need to know the level of drugs testing involved....

I want to see a proper level playing field
