Yes they definitely did prime 15 when Marvin fought.
    And he's the winner imo.

I wonder if it's worth doing a poll on Hagler vs Jones in the final, or whether people have expressed their reasons sufficiently so far?

For me, it'd be a 15 round fight, at a neutral venue (meaning somewhere neither man ever fought), with completely impartial judging, weigh in 30 mins before the ring walk and random drug tests right up to the 30 minute weigh in.

As it's a fantasy match up those parameters are reasonable.

The question is, when it's real, and both men are face to face, who wins?

It’s a great question, but it’s very difficult to answer.

Roy used to rehydrate by a lot of weight.

I can’t envisage him being able to fight to his full capabilities just 30 mins after weighing in.

He may not have been fit enough to have fought at all just 30 mins after the weigh-in.

We can assume that he’d be fine for the sake of the thread, but it wouldn’t be at all realistic.

Whenever this match comes up, I always think of the Sibson version of Hagler, vs the Tate version of Roy. But the only issue with that, is that Roy would be a SMW-LHW on fight night.

They were just from different eras.

Marvin would probably be a JMW today.

He sometimes weighed-in at 157 pounds on a same day weigh-in.

It’s very difficult to envisage a match between guys from different eras when they fought at different weights.

I think Jones would be a waxwork in there without sufficient time to rehydrate. If he had any zip it would be gone by the 5-6th round and Hagler would take charge. Probably stop him late.

People sometimes forget what not hydrating properly does to a fighter.

Canelo used to cut huge weight to make 154 and had a chronic gassing problem. Now that he's cutting less and more at his actual natural weight his fatigue problems have almost gone.

Geale was like a corpse vs Cotto and sucked very badly in their fight.

Kovalev was weight drained against Canelo and looked nothing like his destructive best.

On the other hand allowing RJJ to fully rehydrate means we're looking at an effective SMW or LHW against a MW. Hagler might be in trouble under those conditions, simply because Jones would combine greater size with freakish speed. He might make the end but I'd fancy Jones would bust him up.

Could be wrong, I never really sat down to analyze that matchup but that's my initial thoughts.

Totally get what you are saying.

Isn't it weird though, that guys who are supposed to be middleweights, who decide to choose that division to compete in, find it so difficult to remain healthy and make weight?

Boxing is a funny old sport when you think about it.

You make a great point, as Loudon does, about the weight and the effects of rehydration (or lack thereof).

Maybe, Jones would be more at home in a super middleweight fantasy series?

I would honestly like to see the return of same day weigh-ins, where the fighters are closely monitored.

Most guys would have to move up a division though.

You can do what I call time machine fantasy match ups.

You just choose your favourite version of your favourite fighter. But if you put the Tate version of Roy forward, he’s definitely a SMW-LHW on fight night. But then I guess most MW’s from the late 80’s-early 00’s would be too.

Any great MW who Marvin fought from the modern era would more than likely have had 10-15 pounds on him.

Not sure about that. Imo Roy is above both of them, but both have a fair chance of knocking him out.
GGG being slow is an overstatement. He has slowed down now, but a fee years back he was still pretty fast and the fact that he had a tremendous jab helped a lot in landing following slower punches. Also, yes he is hittable, but he takes punches well and manages to keep the pressure even when on the defensive, which is why I think he also has a good chance against Roy. Not saying I would favor him to beat Roy though

I respect your opinion. But he was never hitting Roy with a jab from a 70” reach, not with Roy’s unorthodox style and lightening reflexes.

I don’t see him catching up to Roy.

I think it would have been a cautious U/D for Roy.

GG might be better than we thought in his prime, without us realising it because of his lack of competition. We don’t know. But for me, there’s just not enough evidence to have given him a good chance against Roy.

He wasn’t a murderous one punch knockout artist.

    He wasn’t super fast.

    He wasn’t big and rangy.

    He wasn’t a southpaw.

    He wasn’t tricky.

He didn’t have the style to really have troubled Roy.

He had the power, but I don’t think he’d have had the opportunity to have landed it.

The only elite guys he fought he struggled with.

    It’s not enough for me.

Roy would have been a big favourite.
