i know these fighters are active but i couldn't bring myself to ask the general forum... i wanted to know what you guys think about this.

if pacquiao had fought in another era, he may well have seen a near-fifty year old light heavy as a decent opportunity. of course hopkins is bigger, and as skillfull as ever, but not known for his power.

does pacquiao have a chance here? how could he beat a 46 year old hopkins? pacquiao would weigh the same as always by the way, 145 pounds max.

side note, langford gave up 29 pounds against johnson, and greb gave up 32 pounds against meehan (1919). not drawing any comparisons, just thought they were interesting points of reference. make of this what you will!

Better question would be prime Tyson vs Pac. I say Manny's blinding speed frustrates Tyson and stops him on cuts in 5.

If this is an honest post?

Hopkins easily. Manny couldn't carry the weight to be effective within 2 weight classes. BHop would stop him.

There is a difference between Langford giving up 29 pounds against Johnson and Hatton giving up 29 pounds against Pavlik.

They're both actually unbeatable, no matter the age or weight they are at. Most likely scenario is the universe implodes. Too much raw awesomeness in one ring.

i'm not saying he'd carry the weight. he'd go into the ring at the weight he's most comfortable at, 145.

do you not think pacquiao could win maybe one fight in five or six attempts?

    The fans.

...That is, if you mean the great Demetrius Hopkins. The welterweight.

I agree, Demetrius was going to get a new corn-hole anyway, eventually.

No, he'd lose all 5 or 6. Unless Hopkins is sick or has an unrelated injury or sickness preceding the fight.

Hopkins would not be afraid of his power; he's faced punchers before and Tarver, Echols, Pavlik and Trinidad all hit harder than Pacquaio. The only thing Manny would have going for him in this fight would be his speed which Bhop would negate with smothering tactics. It would be an ugly fight but I can't imagine Pacquiao winning it.

Most guys who fight Pacquiao stop engaging once they feel his power and are usually broken down by his workrate and his incredible speed. The problem is the difference in size is significant enough Bhop will continue to walk him down, smother him and work on the inside. He won't be able to beat him to the punch but his body punches and extra weight will slow him and his superior ring generalship and timing will over the course of the fight break him down.

In all likelihood it would be a mismatch, of course.

The only thing you can say is there are very few things you can completely rule out in boxing. Walker was hardly supposed to be competitive with Sharkey either, I suppose. And Pacquaio's career has been one of surprises to say the least. Few would have seen him destroying Barrera, and most would have outright laughed at the idea of him doing the same (or worse) to Hatton, Cotto and De La Hoya etc.

Hell, if the odds are right (at least 10-1), I might just put some money on Pac.

all good points. although hopkins is old, and his physical attributes have long been on the wane, he'd probably be just too smart for pacquiao, and press home his advantages as the fight wore on.

i ask this question because i'm unconvinced by pacquiao's overall boxing ability. indeed i don't think he'd even beat mayweather or martinez. that said, if he were really as complete as you often he hear he is, logic would tell you he'd give the old man a fight, especially when you consider his vastly superior stamina, speed and workrate. in reality, though, pacquiao wouldn't know how to get the best from his advantages, and would be out-though all fight long.

this is it, pacquiao's supposed to be the miracle man. fighting guys at higher weights is a no-lose situation. he's outclassing everyone at the moment, so why not put him in a situation in which he'd probably be outclassed? it would give him a chance to show that he could live with bigger guys even if they are all wrong for him stylistically, and maybe he'd be able to deliver a controlled boxing performance too, even in a wide decision loss?

of course boxing wouldn't facilitate such a fight, but i'd like to see it. especially if hopkins is still fighting at fifty, and his stamina has betrayed him completely (it has to happen eventually!)
