Do you mean getting away with massive technical flaws which just proves how poor opposition was?

Or does that sort of argument only apply to old fighters for some reason?

A modern fighter dodging punches with his hands down is him being amazing, and doing things other fighters couldn't do. An old fighter dodging punches with his hands down is him being crude and lacking a proper defence.

It all depends what we see on the film and what we know about the specific opponents. You have to evaluate the technique and skills of a fighter's overmatched opponent and reach your own conclusions on a case-by-case basis. Seems pretty straightforward* to me.

So I'm still genuinely curious--what, if anything, do you find impressive about Stribling's recorded performances? Is there any footage you would recommend to those of us who are skeptical?

*Of course it only works if you actually watch boxing and understand some of the basic principles of boxing though. I get the impression that a lot of the people who believe that boxing technique never evolved, and that late 19th century/early 20th century boxers were every bit as good as their more modern counterparts don't really have much interest in these things.

Jones beat the two best boxers of his generation that were within reach of his weight. Poor opposition indeed.

John L Sullivan beat the top 3 best heavyweights of his generation, including one of the best P4P fighters. Does that make his opposition good?

What if two unorthadox fighters fight?

Do they suddenly become ineffective, when they previously were effective? Even worse if they start neutralising each other.

It surely only works if there's a decent amount of footage, to evaluate them.

His best assets are obviously his footwork, and ability to slip punches.

Disingenuous indeed. You are well aware that boxing was a bit deeper in the 1990's than the 1880's. And Jones didn't just beat the two best boxers in his division at the time but in all of boxing and for his generation.

Good. Because they weren't. And Roy's top victories, Toney, Hopkins, Johnson, McCallum, Hopkins, Hill represent anything but weak opposition. And before anyone plays the game of making excuses why each of these was preprime or postprime or injured or had a bad manicure, name me the fighter that only fought top level, prime, perfectly fit opponents and won.. because they don't exist. Primes of great fighters don't align with precision.

forgot all about this, so not really lol. If forced I would pick Roy at LHW and Stribling at HW, but I have never dug into Stribling like I need to one of these days/years lol. So it’s a very uneducated guess, for whatever that is worth.
