Dempsey never faced anyone near as good a heavyweight as Joe Frazier. Frazier beat better fighters than Dempsey and a lot of fighters better than those that Dempsey fought. Frazier also had no compunction facing differently complected opponents.
Frazier blows Dempsey clean off his kock.. Complete mismatch. Arms down by the hips vs a lightening fast bone crushing hook?? Frazier then meets Rocky and wins. Mid fight tko.
You're not going to convince anyone of anything with your blanket statements and holier-than-thou attitude.
Oh, please pass on your wisdom. Let me listen again to the same tired old fables, most of which I have heard ad nauseum for the past 30 years following the sport. Then, I may just attain enlightenment.
Name calling is so sophisticated and does well to represent all your all-encompassing knowledge of the sport. I have yet to see a single piece of boxing ****ysis from your superior wisdom. Not one iota of X's and O's. Not one anecdote that I haven't read or heard ad nauseum.
I don't understand the need some have to be blowhard. The funny thing is that there is usually an inverse relationship between the ones that have insight to offer and know their stuff and those who are needlessly rude. Having an attitude doesn't make you sound knowledgeable or insightful. I have never heard someone be a jerk, when they could just as easily been cool, and think "wow, they must really know thier stuff".
Must say i give the egde to Dempsey against Frazier whose right hand wasn't a real threat. Jack hits harder, is two handed, probably a better chin and is more versatile being able to slug or box. Relentless as Frazier is along with Jack's unwillingness to back away from a fight i don't see him trying to outbox Joe it would be fought at mid ring and on the inside but Dempsey's more varied offensive threats and attack along with his chin makes it more likely for him to end it first imo. He was also as vicious a finisher as there is. Joe isn't a feather fist by any means but largely a swarmer vs slugger stylistic match here, not as much of a disparity as Frazier vs Foreman but i see it along those lines. I think Marciano definitely beats Joe and i would probably give him a slight edge over Dempsey. That said i give Frazier and Dempsey a much better chance against Johnson than Rocky.
Frazier was a slower starter and Dempsey started fast. (Will Dempsey be sent to the neutral corner after any KD ?) So, Jack could well end things for Joe very early. However, if Joe survives the initial onslaught, he was better all around and would probably UD or KO (left hook) Jack. Johnson was a canny, crafty operator, moreso than Rocky and could well UD him. But Rocky was never beaten and his crouch might have proved bewildering to Jack. This one could go either way. So to sum up, any one of the four could have found a way to win this. If I had to assign percentage probabilities to this they would look something like this (to win the tournament): Marciano 30 % Frazier 28 % Johnson 25 % Dempsey 17 %
Last night re only thing I'd convinced myself of was that Marciano would out point Johnson, I'm not even convinced of that any more.
i do not agree with the 1 arm Frazier opinion whatsoever. On the contrary----he had the most accurate right hand the division has seen. Just go watch it, he doesn't miss. He only throws it to the body. If you dismiss body punching and only count blows to the head, then his right hand is absent. If you factor in body punching, that right hand of Joe's just does not hit air. Ever. And I don't think that punch is going to benefit Dempsey 1 iota. But then again how many guys can take a body punch like an Ali? I think Jack--like lots of heavies--is not going to absorb to the breadbasket like he can to the head. That's the fascinating part of the matchup though--Can Joe last long enough to do sustained bodywork? One thing's for certain in that 1 of the 2 will leave a ton of himself in the ring and would never be the same.
