I had it 8 rounds to 4, 116-112 to Miguel Angel Gonzalez. I feel Chavez was starting to look old in the Whitaker fight, and was 1994. By 1998 he was already way past it and was a shot fighter. He did well but Gonzalez imo outboxed him and landed the better punches throughout. What say you?
Tough sport to win decisions against the big money and popular fighter. No talk of a rematch either--if memory serves. I thought 9-3 or 8-3-1. So handily won the bout. Guess he really need 10 rounds to win a split decison.
Actually Gonzalez won the fight!! Chuck Hassets scorecard were wrongly added up. He scored it 115-114 Gonzalez, giving Gonzalez rounds 1, 2, 5, 6, 10 and 12. Round 4 even and the rest to Chavez. You can find the a copy of the scorecard in Boxing News merch 13th 1998. WBC officials were told, but a gentleman, took no action. Guess why?
I recall Gonzalez being tough and giving a good account of himself, but don't recall thinking he won. A fight I would have to see again.
