I hate admitting it, but Clazaghe won. Not cleanly, it was close, and I think Hopkins did really well, but he lost.
I had the fight 114-113 for Hopkins... A couple of thoughts... 1) Calzaghe did not look to overwhelm Hopkins with speed or power (as many Calzaghe fans thought). This leads me to believe a closer to prime Hopkins would have more easily taken out Calzaghe. 2) Compubox means nothing. Hopkins threw the harder punches, and connected with the crisper punches. Calzaghe did do a lot of "slapping"... 3) A prime Roy Jones would've wiped out Calzaghe, easy UD or KO. 4) I thought Hopkins looked a little slow in the middle rounds, and that age may have finally caught up with him.
I'm even suprise at the close scores. I had Calzaghe winning 8 rounds, with an extra point to Hopkins' for the knockdown.
Fight was close. Could have gone either way. I had it 6 rounds a piece. Which means 114-113 for Hopkins because of the knock down. Maxime,
115-112 Hopkins. slappy joe never landed a single meaningful punch, and if you think he did PLEASE tell me when it happened!
I said it would be a split decision but in truth Calzaghe won a UD. Only a fool would give the decision to Hopkins. He cheated and lied from the third round on but I still think Hopkins would beat the rest in that division.
Cal won, though I had expected more of him. Honestly I only had one rd clearly scored for B-hop and that was rd 1. And only for the knockdown. Hopkins landed 2 shots. Cal didn't do much damage either, but he held the centre ring which generally decides the winner when no one hits anything (which was mostly the case). A great clinching lesson from both though. But... Wait.... Wasn't that supposed to be illegal?
If Hopkins had been busier he would have won. I wasn't impressed with Calzaghe's slapping. Compubox is somewhat misleading.
