:huh...3, 4 and 5 are clearer and 11 and 12 are definite. you must have been influenced by clancy and ryan's commentaries. these 2 are big supporters for ray since he was a regular on their cbs show and hagler's fights were shown mostly on abc. round 1 This content is protected hagler round 2 This content is protected (close but hagler) round 3 This content is protected leonard round 4 This content is protected leonard round 5 and 6 This content is protected leonard, hagler round 7 and 8 and 9 This content is protected hagler, hagler, hagler round 10 and round 11 This content is protected hagler, leonard round 12 This content is protected leonard
in this fight, hagler was clearly the aggressor and was landing the heavier blows which counts as effective punches. close rounds, hagler gets it.
Leonard won rounds 1-4, 6, and 11 fairly clearly IMO. Hagler possibly edged most, if not all of the remaining rounds, but not all of his rounds were as clear cut as the ones I gave to Leonard IMO. Very close fight, but I've always felt that Leonard deserved at least a draw, if not a close win.
IMO, the biggest distortion is the widespread claim that "Hagler landed the harder punches while Leonard just pity patted." In truth, Hagler's punches looked slow and sloppy for much of the fight, and there were times when Leonard actually scored the sharper punches. Leonard also gets criticized for "running while Hagler chased," but this is also a distortion IMO. Leonard mixed in some solid punches among his so-called "pity pats" and got Hagler's respect. Hagler was reduced to tentatively stalking for much of the fight while Leonard boxed brilliantly. Leonard basically outclassed him over the first four rounds, and then continued to outsmart and outgut him even after his ring-rusty body began to tire in the 5th. IMO, Hagler should get a lot more criticism for being "tamed" to the extent that he was - and Leonard should get a lot more credit for doing it.
There are only two rounds that can be disputed, three at most. The rest are clear-cut (I can't remember because although I've watched it several times I haven't done so lately and can't recall the specifics). Depends on how you see those rounds.
I felt Leonard shaded it, though remember a friend of mine felt Hagler had done enough. Everyone I know, felt it was a very close fight
I had Hagler winning round 9, Leonard winning round 12 - what did you think mate? I've seen it twice, scored it a draw and scored it 115-113 to Hagler, but I can see how people would give it 115-113 to Leonard, depending on how you saw rounds 6, 11 and 12, overall I've got no problem with the decision, to this day it's the greatest comeback in the history of the sport
there is no way leonard takes round 1, he was running like he stole something, throwing an occasional pebble to try and slow down hagler. round 6 was close but hagler was throwing the heavier blows so i gave him the round.
Hagler 115-113 Leonard Leonard was holding and hitting all fight and his flurries were the very definition of shoe shining. That said both were clearly past their best, tired and inaccurate with shots.
