It was a close fight but it wasn't a horrible verdict (on 2 out of 3 cards anyway). Simpsons history of losing out has just fanned the flames.

One thing I will say is that in times gone passed, Simpson would likely have won that fight. When I score fights I try to adopt the scoring habits of the judges of the era - so I won't score Gonzalez-Ibarra in the same "style" as Simpson-Smith. If I was scoring this fight as a 50's fight, i'd have Simpson up clear.

In my honest opinion, you don't have to be a corrupt judge to get a Smith win out of that mess under modern scoring rules, rules meant loosely. I don't even think, speaking as a Simpson fan, that you need to be corrupt to get that O'Connor card.

If this fight were scored in the 1930's, say, Smith would have been penalised for holding (probably) and there would have been a LOT of drawn rounds on the cards. Now, the judges have to call most of those rounds. When you're forced as a judge to call rounds that are achingly close (and the way modern fights tend to be scored, they were close rounds), you can kick up some weirdness because judges do tend to favour certain styles/types of work. In a round they see as even they will score for the man that has the style/does the type of work they like. They may also favour the man they consider superior.

I'm not saying there wasn't shinaningans here, just that this result is possible without.

I gave it to Smith, thought he got the start of the fight, Simpson took the middle but Smith took the end. It was really close though, so i have no qualms about somebody having it a draw or giving it Simpson.

The only thing is, to the people who are lambasting Smith for holding, when Smith would get something going, Simpson was holding on as well, especially as the fight was going on.

This is pretty much how i saw it Smith early Simpson middle Smith late with a second wind/heart.

John was just as guilty as Smith imo at times people are laying the blame at Smiths feet for some reason.

Yep, he could've had points deducted for the hitting behind the head, would've been harsh but he kept on doing it.

Richie Woodhall made a good point about smith, he'll throw his shots and then his feet remain in the same place allowing him to get hit back. Needs to sort that out. The jab wasn't straight enough a lot of the time as well.

    I don't get your issue?

Smith clearly won 80% of rounds with clean work and stifling Simpsons inside game, if anything I'd have scored it to Smith by a wider margin...
