I have 114-113 Cotto, but if you got creative in your manner of scoring I could see a draw or a Clottey win. The way you score a couple rounds matters a lot. Usually an automatic 10-8 for the first round, but you could argue for a 9-9 because it was just a flash knockdown. I don't think that a 9-9 round would be allowed for the judges though. Also there was a round or two that Clottey beat Cotto from pillar to post, you could make argument for him to get 10-8 there, but these are arguments that don't hold a lot of weight, only a little. You'd think Clottey would try to be fairly even in his assault. The rounds he won were obvious, he just totally creamed Cotto in those rounds. And then he'd let them be close, closer, and away they go to Cotto.
People are too quick to award 10-8 rounds. If both guys stay on their feet, a 10-8 round is a rarity. BTW, I would have scored round 1 10-9 for Cotto. Clottey had cleanly outworked him before getting caught with a beautiful shot.
The result was correct. A Cotto SD reflected the fight. Clottey had two great rounds, but over the piece he just didn't do enough to merit a win, plus Cotto had the only 10-8 round of the fight.
Clottey landed more punches and won more rounds, despite what the judges said. Clottey should have been given the decision.
Cotto won, or to be more precise, Clottey gave the fight away by not throwing enough in the later rounds. He has no one to blame but himself. What a dumb ass. Blew the opportunity of a lifetime and a chance to be financially secure for the rest of he life.
