My point is that the DLH haters and Whitaker huggers try to re-write history everytime this fight is brought up by saying DLH sisn't land SH**., which is totally bogus. DLH landed the more meaninful punches and outlanded Whitaker in the power punch category. DLH pressed the action, and attempted to score. On the other hand the 147 P4P champ was to busy trying to avoid any real exchanges, and resorted to ineffective clowning. You want to see effective clowning, watch RJJ. Watch him against Trinidad where he clowns and scores as opposed to Whitaker where he clowned and didn't score crap.
No it was not classic Sweet pea. Classic sweet pea stayed in the pocket and threw variety of punches while making his opponent miss. This sweet pea flicked out a little jab and avoided DLH at every turn.
And Oscar had him flicking out weakass little jabs all night. Oscar atleast pressed the fight, landed several good shots, and had Whitaker out of his comfort zone. If you have seen whitaker before you know he wasn't as shy to let his hands go as he was against DLH.
If I'm biased then so is just about half of ESB and the boxing community who feel Oscar won a close fight. The judges were way off with their scoring, but the fight was close. I can see an argument having Pea winning, but saying that Pea was robbed is nonsense.
Perhaps the only thing that the majority can agree on. At least, the majority of sane people, anyway. I don't have a problem with people scoring it for Hoya by a round, or people scoring it for Whitaker by a round. No fighter got robbed, and the old cliche of 'it could have gone either way' is entirely applicable here. It's actually a fairly dull fight, except for the lovely matrix-esque dodging that Whitaker gives us at a few points, and those sequences have rightfully ended up in a number of highlight reels. (I love how the crowd cheer and Lampley goes berserk even though Hoya is hitting nothing but air. Great stuff.)
That was just a trickle, but that swollen eye didn't come from just hitting the air. Hoya landed plenty :hi:
Hoya landed plenty, but very few flush shots. Whitaker had that mouse on him in the second round. Hoya didn't do much after that to alter his features. Personally I don't think you can judge a fight by the damage done to the opponent's face, but I'm just saying, that even if that is your claim, it's not a strong one.
"Great flurry by De La Hoya!!!!" - Lampley at the end of round 10 Great flurry= a dozen punches that connect with the air and nothing else.
