Who was around, who was in the cross-hairs, who were the top 2 or 3 contenders and was their anyone that could have troubled him?
They were hoping Valdes beat Bob Satterfield to make a fight against Marciano seem appetizing but Valdez got owned by Satterfield and dropped for a 9 count in the 10th round. There really was no one of interest, Marciano despite the flash knock-down vs Moore dominated Archie and Floyd and Cus were not going to fight him. Liston had like 8 fights and was no-where in sight.....I think it was a good time to quit but would have liked to see him go for # 50 and the 44th KO but he just had to get away from Weill
In an old B I article I still have somewhere,Marciano said he would have had to wait a year for Patterson. Valdes was beaten by Moore ,there really was not a stand out threat. Pastrano would not have made an exciting fight, though he may have fiddled his way to the distance. I would like to have seen Rocky in with Satterfield and Baker, but, neither would have got any of my money .
Pastrano was smart and fast as **** and may have lasted 15 to lose a decision. hardly a satisfactory 50th for Rocky.
Patterson might have been 51 or 52, but I don't see him being Marciano's 50th opponent. The contract for the 50th fight would surely have been negotiated before Patterson had been moved into position.
The Rock's camp had mentioned that he was going to have a fight in June of 1956...of course he retired in April 1956...
There really was no body around, Rocky still had a good 3-4 fights left in him but the circumstances with Weill and his lack of fights of interest made his decision easy
FEBUARY 1956: Archie Moore Bob Baker Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson John Holman Willie Pastrano Nino Valdes Johnny Summerlin Bob Satterfield Young Jack Johnson Ezzard Charles
A step down in the quality of his opposition, and the revenue generated by the fight, look highly likley.
Baker, Jackson, Pastrano seem to be the front runners and Valdes and Satterfield would have definitely been fun? For me, my dream pick would be Summerlin.
Like you said Satterfield is guaranteed fun. Valdez - big heavyweight - interesting match-up. Why Summerlin?
