Talk of Floyds possible opponenets for May 5th, and Miguel Cotto's name came up. So I'm curious about who you think would give Floyd the bigger challenge.

Pacquaio 2012 - We've all wanted this for 3 years now, even longer if they eventually do fight. Both fighters are Megastars and have huge followings, this PPV has an X-factor the the general public that Floyd - Cotto would not.
When factoring in who'd be the bigger challenger, bear in mind that Floyd is now older, and essentially a part time fighter, before he retired in 2007 after Hatton, he fought fairly regular.

Cotto 2008 - Mayweather beat Hatton in December 2007, then retired. Cotto during the same year had beaten Zab Judah and then Shane Mosley. The hottest rising star in Boxing was Miguel Cotto. There had been no Antonio Margarito fight, so Miguel had no idea what it was like to lose, or to be out gunned in a Boxing ring.
Again factor in that, Cotto was a machine at this time, widely accepted as Boxings version of the terminator. Floyd was also still a relatively small WelterWeight, and not the bigger guy who we've seen fight Marquez, Mosley and Ortiz.

Who was the bigger challenge, and why?

Pacquiao. Cotto would have gotten destroyed by Mayweather back then and right now.

    Cotto doesn't challenge Floyd in 06, 08, 09, or 12.

Pacquiao does provide a challenge as he would be his best victory, albeit not the greatest in terms of difficulty of his career (Corrales, perhaps Genaro).

Wow man you got me to remember how Mayweather vs Cotto once was the biggest fight outthere. A shame it never happened, but I still think Pacquiao is a bigger threat but only by veeeeeery little, thats because Pac is a southpaw.

I think Cotto of 2008 gives him a harder fight than PACROID ever dreamed of.

Cotto is the one guy, IMO, u can make a claim that Floyd ducked em.

Yep, I think that style wise 08 Cotto was much more dangerous to Floyd than Manny Pacquaio, the voting is closer than I thought. I expected a near Pacquaio Whitewash.

I really think the Margo fight changed Cotto from an A+ fighter, to a B+ one.

HAHA your 2008 turned into 8) lol. but yea i feel as if cotto would give him more trouble in his prime. It feels like mayweathers style is perfect to beat pacman. Honestly when cotto fought pacman he didnt have that intensity he had in every fight before margarito. He lost that fire.

I'm not sure why people feel the necessity to overhype Cotto. What people need to realize is that a great defense will always neutralize a good offense. Cotto is a one handed fighter. You take away that left hand and he's in trouble. When have you ever seen a one handed fighter have sustained success against a defensive specialist? When you add in that Cotto is wide open for a straight right, lacks stamina, and doesn't have the strongest chin, you can see why he would have a hard time having much success against Mayweather.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, is an athletic freak. Even if he's outgunned technically, his sheer athleticism always gives him a legit shot.

I don't think either are a massive challenge but Pacquaio has speed workrate and power. Cotto has what exactly that bothers Floyd?
