Mosley is clearly past it. His stamina cannot sustain the workrate required to be competitive in boxing, and with Steward in his corner, Cotto would be able to outpoint him and probably stop him late after landing increasingly hard shots on an idle Mosley. He can't pull the trigger like he would need to anymore, and if you can't shoo Cotto away with power or keep clear of him, he's going to get you hard.
I'm still up in the air about Shane. He seemed to be really working to get down to 147 and told that USADA guy how hard it would be to even give him a urine sample on the last check. And maybe there's something to his over-training, so close to having trained for the Berto fight at his age, going into another camp for Floyd. i don't know. I do wonder if he might not surprise us a little bit again. If it's at 154 after a good rest...who knows.
I think Cotto wins the rematch and not because of the Floyd-Shane fight...Floyd would beat up Cotto too. Shane is past it. Not because of the Floyd fight but because if you saw him years ago you know it's a different fighter, he had been on the slide for a while until his Margarito domination revived him. I think Cotto beats him more comfortably than the last time.
Cotto wins.. he beat him the first time and if they were to rematch i think he would win by a bigger margin at this point in their careers
Am I the only one trying to be careful not to be overly influenced by the fact that Cotto looked excellent beating a good fighter and Mosley looked bad against an all-time great fighter? The whole deal where people are only as good as their last fights deal can be extremely deceptive and I think it certainly was with a lot of the people picking Mosley over Floyd because of the Margo fight.
Agreed. I'm not though, like I said Mosley hasn't looked good in a while until the Margo fight. So based on what I've seen overall, I'd still favor Cotto over Mosley. Although, with Cotto's skin, almost every fight feels 50/50 to me as he's so prone to cuts now.
Good point but I really never felt even with Mosley's win over Margo that he was ever going to beat Floyd. I just think at this point in both of there careers seeing that Cotto beat Mosley the first time and now with Emmanuel with him in his corner his would probably win by a bigger margin. But who knows.... thats boxing.
I see what you mean because there is too much of a focus just on a fighter's last fight, which is why I didn't give Mosley much of a chance vs Floyd despite how good he looked vs Margo. In analyzing Cotto-Mosley II, I'm seeing that it wasn't just vs Mayweather Shane struggled against, but Mosley also didn't look too good (by his standards) against Mayorga, which took place right before the Margarito beatdown and after the close but clear loss to Cotto the first time around. What I'm getting at is maybe the Margarito domination was Shane capturing lightning in a bottle one last time, because outside of that, it's been a few years since he really looked good in victory. I think it'd be a tougher task for Shane to beat Cotto now than it was before when Mosley was younger, Cotto was still relatively new to 147, and Miguel didn't have Manny in his corner.
I'm a fan of both fighters, but Mosley is clearly past it and Cotto would definitely win a very clear decision or even a stoppage win.
Yes, his mouth was open after he had the advantage in round two and failed to press that advantage at all, and simply fell into a habit of feinting and thinking while Floyd fired right hands. I didn't see any outsmarting or outboxing on Floyd's part- just fast one twos at Mosley's head as he sat there exhausted unable to get any punches off. Mayweather's a great talent, but he didn't look as good that night as Mosley looked old. So that made it clear in my mind that the overtraining combined with his inactivity and age deteriorated any executable skills he might have salvaged or resurrected under Nazim.
The problem is Mosley didn't just look bad, he looked terrible... I like Mosley, I really do, and I think Floyd deserves credit for fighting Shane; but lets face it, Shane did a really bad job. Feint, feint, feint, feint, get hit by punch is not an effective combo...
