Who would win if Mayweather Jr. fought the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr?

A lot people seem to obsess over the first Castillo fight when it comes to discussing Mayweather against Chavez. Obviously it's valid to consider it to an extent, but you can make anything look like a mis-match or make your pick look authoritative if you take the absolute worst of one fighter and match it against the absolute best of another. That first Castillo fight was a pretty big exception, not the norm.

Could people not just as easily say: "Look at how much trouble Taylor had Chavez in, and look how poor Chavez was against Whitaker and Randall. How is he going to beat someone like Floyd who combines the hand speed, good inside game and world-class defence of those guys"? At least here there's a slight trend, instead of having to base it all on one close fight - which Mayweather rematch immediately and won a lot more clearly next time out.

Personally I'd be very surprised if Chavez could beat Mayweather at 130. Chavez wasn't as dominant or strong there as he was at the higher weights, whereas it was arguably Mayweather's very best weight in terms of being able to mix his tight defence and speed, which he always had, with the greater strength, combination punching and more adventurous side which started fading away once he'd moved beyond 140. And we know damn well that he's beating Chavez at 147 and (goes without saying) 154. Just not Julio's weights and Mayweather filled out well into them.

At 135 and 140 it's obviously a tough fight for both men but I think Mayweather has the styles advantage. I think he's sold a little short in hypotheticals on here.

Yeah but Floyd had trouble twice against Castillo. In the 2nd fight, Floyd pulled the fight out in the latter rounds. The judges gave him the nod by a narrow 2 point margin. Personally, I thought both fights could have gone either way.

Taylor and Floyd have obviously different styles. Taylor was much busier , throwing combinations.

Personally , I see Robinson stopping him at welter. A defensive
minded fighter with not enough fire power to make Robinson
respect him , is doomed to eventually getting stopped.
Robinson walks Mayweather Jr. down with in 11 rds.

Mayweather Jr fought two fighters similar to Chavez
in Maidona and Castillo . They both gave him hell.
Chavez was a much better pressure fighter than
    those two.
Again Mayweather Jr above lightweight didn't
have the firepower to keep Chavez honest.
In my opinion Chavez wins a clear dec.
Benitez would have a reach and height
advantage, plus being a natural welterweight
would win a dec against Mayweather jr. in
a very dull fight with both waiting for
    countering opportunities.
Ray Leonard See my Ray Robinson comment.
Roberto Duran, see my Chavez comment, but
    with a ko.
Hearns a total mismatch, if any fighter in history
could ko Mayweather jr early. It would be Hearns.
Whitaker would be another dull affair, Mayweather
could win this one, but it would be very, very close.

However, in their primes, Mayweather Jr wouldn't
"Take a chance and be great". and fight any of those
fighters. He never showed that willing to take the
toughest challenges with out some advantage
    that's apparent.

Box rec aside, Mayweather Jr isn't close to being
the greatest fighter in history. Sorry Box rec is bible
    fans....

Why would Mayweather lose to these? a prime Mayweather never showed anything that he could be defeated, so why is it fair to pick these guys who had losses to beat Mayweather? I know y'all hate Mayweather, but you have to look at it solely from a boxing perspective

Castillo 1 certainly showed that he could be defeated, even if the judges gave him the decision. Using the "0" as your only argument isn't going to hold water. How does he defeat a prime Ray Robinson who had blistering two handed power and a killer mentality, enough speed and skill to keep up with him in a flat out boxing match and the size and height advantage? Hearns in particular seems like a nightmare matchup for Mayweather, too much power, too great of an advantage in the physical dimensions. If Mayweather beat Margarito and Williams, then this would be a different discussion, but I don't recall too many times he took on someone who was a prime world class operator who had those sorts of advantages against him.

I would say that Benitez and Chavez would be the closest matchups of all of them, as has been mentioned, the Benitez-Mayweather fight would not be an action packed affair in most likelihood, giving Floyd a good chance to pick up a close decision, and Chavez could be outboxed, and if it was held above 135, Floyd would have more than a good chance of doing so. But I could also see JCC pulling it off by pouring on the pressure and never letting up.

I could understand this reaction if this was a list of second tier fighters, and Mayweather should be heavily favored in those for the most part, but when the best face the best enough times, everyone picks up losses. Nobody's invincible, and Mayweather doesn't hold all the advantages in these situations.

The way I see it, Duran wasn't really knocking people out at 147, not class competition anyway. And Floyd himself wasn't close to being knocked out at that weight.
Floyd's record is better, Duran's best win is better.
    Strictly at 147
