So what McGuigan would have been favoured to beat Nelson in the UK and Northern Ireland but Nelson would have inflicted a brutal knockout.

No, Nelson fought great v Sanchez while Barrera lost to Morales at a lower weight and had been beaten twice by Junior Jones.

I would take Azumah over MAB, Hamed and McGuigan any day of the week. I am not a gambling man (except for lottery tickets, lol), but would bet on Azumah against those 3 with massive confidence.

Why did he chicken out of the fight. He knows he did so did his management and the whole world knows he did. Nut hugging does not hide the truth.

ok, i'll bite. Lets say for the sake of argument McGuigan was Commonwealth champion. Nelson then fights a guy in an eliminator for the right to face him. Nelson wins that fight and then McGuigan relinguishes said title. Would that be classed as a duck?

He’d be ready for the taking by about his 5th or 6th defense. He would also be destroyed by Hamed himself.

McGuigan should have defended his title v Nelson instead of the three challengers he fought instead.
McGuigan made his first defence against American Bernard Taylor, who was stopped in the ninth round, and then against Danilo Cabrera, who got knocked out in fourteen rounds. This proved to be a controversial stoppage: the fight was stopped after the challenger bent over to pick up his mouthpiece after losing it, a practice that is allowed in many countries but not in Ireland. Cabrera was not aware of this, and the fight was stopped. Although Cabrera's corner protested the outcome, McGuigan remained the winner by a knockout. For his next defence, he went to Las Vegas in June 1986, where he faced the relatively unknown Stevie Cruz from Texas in what proved a gruelling fifteen-round title bout under a blazing sun. McGuigan held a lead halfway through, but suffered dehydration because of the extreme heat and wilted near the end, being dropped in rounds ten and fifteen. He eventually lost a close decision and his world belt, which he was never to reclaim. After the fight, McGuigan required hospitalisation because of his dehydrated state.

I don’t know that anybody could. Wayne McCullough is known for one thing in particular: having one of the greatest chins any of us have ever seen.

dunno where you cut and pasted that from but it doesnt answer my question mate. And even at that, why 'should' he have defended against Nelson? Taylor was his mandatory, the no1 challenger. Cabreras next fight after mc guigan was another title shot against Nelson, so whatever mcguigans being accused of, if anything, then Nelson should face the same accusations, again if any. Also that fight against nelson was the day before McGuigan lost to Cruz, a late substitute when Sosa pulled out. then went on his sabbatical for near 2yrs. The talk at the time was that retirement was a serious option being considered. Yes, it woulda be great for them to have met but i cant see how mcguigan gets flak for a period that really was talked about for less than a year. Now i am NOT suggesting anyone ducked anyone else and yes, Nelson would go on to prove a fantastic fighter far above mc guigan, but if mcguigan done what nelson done regarding the giving up of the commonwealth title when he won the eliminator to face him, he woulda got crucified for it in these kinda threads. My point is, if Nelson wanted him THAT bad, he had the chance but didnt. We all know the goading was to seal a huge payday and who could blame Nelson, i certainly wouldnt, McGuigan was the big payday

nice try but i think you'll find thats the Rings ratings. Taylor may be 8th there but he was no1 ranked in the WBA, hence him being mcguigans mandatory

EDIT. Also that was compiled in the spring of 86, roundabout the cabrera defence and 3 months before mc guigan lost his title and id hazard a guess roundabout when negotiations for the sosa fight were taking place, but thats just a guess albiet a reasonable one but not fact
