Is there anyone? or is Hearns the H2H best ever at 154? Armstrong??? No way, just too small. Tito??? Not a chance. Norris??? Doesn't stand a chance. Hagler??? Possibly. It would be interesting to see how drained he would be at 154 pounds. He wasn't a huge MW. Golovkin??? With same day weigh ins he simply wouldn't make the weight. Toney??? Couldn't make the weight. Jones Jr.??? Too green. Jackson??? Won't get near Hearns' chin. Leonard??? Tough one here. Leonard would be a live dog, but still the underdog at 154 pounds. Robinson??? Would blast out Hearns at 147. But at 154 the size could become a problem. Robinson though may still be the betting favorite anyway.
I think McCallum certainly would have a shot. He had the chin to get through the early rounds, and the body attack to slow Hearns down if Hearns went into boxing mode. Also, Leonard if he didn't retire in '82 and didn't have eye problems, would have a great shot to repeat what he did at 147.
I would always have Hearns as the Favourite at 154. It was, IMO, a division in which he was at his optimum fighting weight. A few would have had a good go, e.g. McCallum; Benvenuti - even Wright might have presented a challenge. But, Hearns seemed to be the complete package at Light Middleweight, without the vulnerabilities - a veritable fighting machine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think McCallum and Leonard both have a great chance of beating Hearns at 154. Both McCallum and Hearns fought out of Kronk. Although it may have just been due to a risk/reward ****ysis, Tommy wanted no part of The Body Snatcher. Hearns would DESTROY Winky Wright. Whether he bombed Wright out or outboxed him, the fight would not be competitive.
Hearns would have won - I don't doubt it. "Destroy"? I doubt that. Prime Winky was never stopped and was always awkward enough to force strangely close decisions in defeat.
No one who actually campaigned at that weight. Maybe only Robinson if he counts. Leonard also. Out of those who I don't favour, Tito, Mosley and McCallum have the best shot.
Robinson would regularly come in well under 160 pounds when he fought at MW. Obviously his optimal weight is 147, but 154 was much better for him than 160.
How about Oscar "Shotgun" Albarado ? He was one of the first Super Welterweight Champions. Besides, he is a Texan.
