I personally have Chocolatito, the comeback to beat Kal Yafai and come through a quality challenger in Israel Gonzalez is quite impressive in a year of relative inactivity and lack of surprises among the top level. I don't think one great win cuts it, so no Teofimo, Briedis or Zepeda. If Povetkin beats Whyte again I could see a case being made for him too. Maybe if Fury fights the likes of Rivas or Hunter and beats them as well but Choco is my guy for now.
I would say Tyson Fury if he fights and beats someone like Kabayel or Takam. Roman scored a great win over Yafai and it was a great performance as well, but Yafai was the weakest of the champions at 115 pounds, and Wilder was considered the 2nd best in the division.
Very valid points, I'm all for accepting those pre conditions. I think the fact Choco wasn't expected to make such a comeback is definitely a factor in my decision making. Yafai was relatively weak in a stacked division but still a quality operator and he got dismantled, that gutsy and quality performance against Israel swayed it for me. He fought a very game and able challenger and broke him down. In fact it seems to be second nature for Choco to just pull off ridiculously smooth combos on the inside. Mini Duran right there, never in a boring affair. This year is slim pickings though so I don't imagine there'd be too many solid challengers for fighter of the year.
See I feel you kinda need more than a single good fight to be considered the fighter of the year, otherwise it makes the whole tag pointless and should simply be "best win of the year".
Lopez is in there for me as he shocked the majority of fans with his win over Loma. The last few months we have gotten some great FOTY candidates
There's something about the lack of fans that's made these fighters go all out on each other. There have been way fewer boring fights this year as well. I'm beginning to think that having the potential of being beaten in front of a crowd inspires a safety-first attitude in many subconsciously.
Well, a fighter fights an average of twice a year . You only have two options, or one great win cuts it, or two great wins cut it. I have no especial candidate for the fighter of the year, but to say that one great fight is not enough... when even there are fighters who only fight once.... and basically no one at top level fights more than twice...
I personally didn't have Loma as the best fighter in the world. I thought that mantle is more deserved by Usyk, Inoue or even Canelo. Still not taking away that Lopez has the single best win of the year, but overall fighter of the year? That's a bit too easy to get if one great fight is all it takes. Jermell Charlo unified the belts and became Ring champion too but I don't exactly rate his year as the best either despite the accolades.
Most fighters don't fight twice a year, that'd be only a bevy of top level guys who can afford to do so. But even then, my minimum is two good fights at least, it's not that hard an ask for such a high reward.
Well, top fighters are the candidates to fighter of the year, so most candidates will fight only twice. Some of them only once. And basically no top fighter fights 3 times a year. None. If there is any, it's a really rare exception. 1 really awesome great fight and a decent fight is more than enough. Unless someone has 2 really awesome great fights. Especially in this year, weird as F. Tbh, yafai and israel gonzalez.... it's good, I dont deny it, but you cant rate any of them over lomachenko. And teo is 23 yo. And I'm not saying that teo is the fighter of the year. I have no candidate, as I said. I have no especial fighter this year, no preference, at all.
