1 good win might do it for someone. This is a unique year. Guys aren't active as much in years past. It's not their fault.
This is really my "so far" pick. Fury and Povetkin are my next picks depending on their next fights. Hell Jose Zepeda beating Castaneda in a solid performance and having the fight of the year against a top fighter in Baranchyk could be another shout. I certainly wouldn't complain with him.
Fair enough, I still would rate someone with a great single win and an otherwise solid or good win in a year. But I feel only fighting once a year isn't conducive to establishing you as the best fighter of a particular year. If Teofimo gets it officially, it'd only be by the merit that this year has shut down the opportunity for other fighters to stake their own more credible claims.
Guys not being as active seems almost counterintuitive to me. They're still gonna be taking licks, they're not going to make any more money just sitting around and waiting. Hell I'd just take knock over jobs as basically paid sparring if I were in their position. Keeping active is rarely a hindrance to a fighter, being risk averse is something I absolutely will hold against fighters, because the sport is predicated on taking risks. How many times have you heard guys being praised as being throwback fighters for adhering to the basic expectation of fighting regularly and against quality opposition every now and then? It's really not too much to ask of them. I do agree with your point that this year of all years might be the one where one fight is enough to nick the fighter of the year title.
Clay Collard Lopez or Fury fighter Estrada vs Cuadras II fight Roman Gonzalez comeback fighter Povetkin or Zepeda for KO Upset maybe Helenius or Jeison Rosario, Struggling to remember upsets this year
I agree for the most part but I think this year is different. You have to take into account that a lot of top fighters are only fighting once in 2020.
The buildup to, and in-ring performance of Fury in Wilder-Fury II really stands out this year. It really shook the world back in Feb. It's hard to judge that against a low action COVID fight like Loma-Lopez, unfortunately. Gotta go with Fury.
Yeah I'll perhaps give an exception this year but Fury and Povetkin could both come in and stake their claims. Povetkin has the best chance for me. If he sparks Whyte twice, that's a lock.
