I have a few problems with Werdum facing Mir next. As far as title contention it only really works if Mir wins. Werdum has already lost to both JDS and Overeem. He lost to JDS very convincingly, and JDS has just seemed to get better and better. While Werdum has improved his stand up I don't think anyone here is delusional enough to think it's good enough to go up against JDS. Werdum lost to Overeem very recently. And does anyone really want to see that **** over 5 rounds? Fact is, a win over Roy Nelson doesn't really impress me, the dude has looked like **** since winning TUF, and he looked pretty average in that process as well. He has nothing but a ****ing granite chin and this 'huge right hand' we keep hearing about but rarely see. Dude needs to start training properly and drop a serious amount of weight before I'll start taking him seriously. I'd much rather see Werdum get matched up lower down the chain, get some distance in between him and the Overeem loss. Werdum v the Kongo/Hunt winner would be fun to watch, or even someone like Russow and really let Werdum practice his striking.
The Werdum that lost to JDS was probably the worst Werdum we've hever seen enter a cage/ring, to be fair. Not saying he wouldn't lose again if there is a rematch.
Very good points by Primate. The problem is - who else is there for him to face? I suppose one of the interesting questions is whether there's going to be a second season of TUF: Brazil this year. If so then perhaps Werdum against JDS (if JDS loses to Overeem) or Big Foot as coaches makes sense?
Depending on when JDS and Overeem fight, it could be an idea to have Werdum and Mir face off with the winner taking on the Barnett v Cormier winner. Whoever comes out top of the pile from those 4 would be a very worthy contender. The only problem of course is that Cain is still in the picture, if he gets by Bigfoot then he'll still be sniffing around the title picture.
My ideal match ups would be 1. Mir versus Werdum 2. Cain versus Bigfoot I do not want to see Werdum fight Congo
I'm still considering Werdum on a run like Bisping. Even though they lost, it seems people consider them controversial. I wasn't impressed by the Overeem win and it was not clear cut. They are 1 and 1. JDS was unknown, blew away Werdum but Werdum has worked his way back to the top. If Mir wins then he is the number 1 contender and if Werdum wins, he could be the number 1 contender or be 1 win way.
Im not sure about this theory Reason being , you can never really adopt a formular style approach when giving somebody a title shot , example , Werdum beats Fedor , loses to Overeem switches to the UFC then looks impressive in beating Nelson but cannot be considered for a title fight because he's 0 and 2 to dos Santos and Overeem , that for me doesnt work , the man is dangerous and does have the skill set to pose anybody @HW problems , therefore he can never really be dis counted a shot at the title if he has the right momentum , which by beating Nelson and then potentially Mir , he's definatley on the right track In terms of ranking the division , Velasquez , Werdum , Mir & Carwin are now in a pool of considered top contenders , if Antonio Silva enters that picture then him also , so the UFC should now be working on matching them fighters as they see fit to determine who fights dos Santos / Overeem If any of them fighters pick up a W against any one of the other (maybe barring Carwin) then theoretically they can all qualify There are a couple of things to consider here , keeping Frank Mir relevant is in the best interest of the UFC therefore Carwin 2 and Velasquez are out for him , additionally UFC brass im pretty sure would prefer Cain Velasquez to be there top man , so expect the Brock Lesnar style PR push and matchmaking to follow , they dont like Werdum , he's not to great on the eye , so he may well be fed to the lion's , which isnt a bad thing because he (unlike Mir) can handle that type of competition Going back to matching Werdum , i dont see how " matching him down the chain " benefits anyone :huh he's one of the worlds top fighters , he's a very capable guy , he now looks to be well rounded too , he should be matched accordingly , i like Mir , Velasquez or Carwin for Werdum personally , whether thats a title eliminator is irrelevant , its about matching the top guys and Werdum is ranked a top 5 fighter
Werdum was supposedly ill-prepared for JDS and as an unknown quantity would not have not known what to expect. Even with his newfound striking confidence no ****ing way does he play that game again :nono Interesting fight regardless of the outcome first time round. Both have come on. If Werdum beats Mir, it should happen, would be big in Brazil.
He has to engage a striker to implement his JJ game , he cannot wrestle therefore he has to physically hurt an opponent on the feet , or physically get a hold of them at some point in the fight Hence we got him trying to pull guard on Overeem for 3 rounds My question would be , where does he go from there ??? , and how does he improve that aspect of his game against more natural and effective strikers ???
