I keep going back to Monzon. I know he’s extremely respected here. When I watch him, I see a great fighter like everybody else does. But to me he looks too slow for Roy.

Del Valle wasn’t great. But he was a big LHW who managed to land a great punch. But other than that, he lost every round. And that was Roy at almost 30 in his 3rd weight class.

I don’t see how it can be used as a strong piece of evidence.

It would be like predicting an easy win for Roy, based on Marvin’s fight with Leonard.

You can compare them by looking at what he did against better opponents up at higher weights, where he used the exact same set of attributes as what he used at MW.

Basically, you can compare their ability.

Roy didn’t need a great run at MW to be ranked highly.

He beat Castro, Hopkins, Malinga and Tate. And then shortly after beating Tate, he easily beat James Toney. That is more than enough evidence when looking at H2H ability.

He didn’t need Hopkins’ record number of defences.

The Tate version of Roy is the same version who beat Toney.

Toney wasn't in shape for Jones.

Roy would have been a terrible stylistic match up for Canelo.

True. But that was Roy’s peak.

Toney wasn’t in shape for a number of his fights. But nobody beat him as easy as what Roy did.

Im talking about them both being southpaws and the issues roy faced against lefties.. look at how he got knocked out against Tarver. It was no secret lefties had success against roy.

Sure, but that was a 35 year old version of Roy who’d had 50 fights, after dropping back from HW.

Tarver didn’t knock him out in the other 2 fights.

There’s no evidence to suggest that he’d have knocked out a prime version of Roy.

Of course if Marvin could have landed that same punch, then sure. But would he have been able to have landed it?

A prime version of Roy was the version who faced Toney, which 10 years before he lost to Tarver.

Toney had better fundamentals than Jone ,imo but lacked discipline.

Roy fought southpaws more often than orthodox fighters during his reign at LHW. Eventually one of them was going to have success. He usually did well against them. Roy and Hopkins were two guys in that era who beat more southpaws than anyone else I can think of.

Maybe Hagler’s southpaw stance might help as Roy was less experienced against them at 160, but mostly I say he would give him problems because he was Marvin ****ing Hagler.

That’s your opinion what you’re obviously entitled to. But I couldn’t have given Canelo a realistic chance of beating Roy. He could never have coped with Roy’s speed and unorthodox style.
