Who would you pick to win a barfight *against Sonny Liston*?

    In contrast to our other barfight threads, I've made this one specific. You know exactly who your opponent will be.

    You are picking a boxer to act as your bodyguard in a bar.

    The bar contains Sonny Liston. You have a history with Liston. Sonny has been waiting for years to beat you up in a bar, and is also intoxicated enough to get mean.

    (Tyson is also at the bar, but he's smoking weed, and is drunk. Tyson doesn't care about your feud with Liston. In fact, Tyson is just scenery to add to the scenario's authenticity. Ignore him.)

    The bar is owned by Tony Galento. Tony doesn't like you either. He won't stop Sonny from going after you. Galento will, however, use violence against you if you or your bodyguard try to preemptively attack Liston. Consequently, you must wait for provocation and respond with proportional force against Liston, or Galento will intervene on Sonny's side.

    I tried to talk you out of going to this bar, but you're too stubborn. So don't blame me for what happens. It's your own fault.

    Who do you pick as your bodyguard?

    If you mean a two on two fight, that fight would turn into a one on two fight after the first blow.
    If my bodyguard doesn't have to be a boxer than Francis Ngannou.

    Following the fatal shooting of Liston and Galento, Officer Cammerelle takes you and Walter Dipley into custody. Sadly, Dipley has no financial resources to pay for an attorney.

    There's a story I recall reading about when Sonny was in Britain, Scotland specifically. He was sat near a small Scottish fighter - I think it may have been Peter Keenan - who was smoking a cigar.

    Sonny took objection to the smell of this - being the clean liver he was, and all - and told Peter to put it out to which Peter replied (I've not translated from the Scottish, btw, and may have embellished but I've stayed true to the gist).

    "Ye dinnae like mah cigar? Well, ye may be a big fella but ah've never lost a street fight in mah life. So if ye dinnae like mah cigar, ye'll be going oot that windae, there." He pointed to a Liston-sized window. I imagine, though the anecdote didn't confirm this, that they weren't on the ground floor.

    I don't know what happened immediately after but, apparently, there was a photo of Keenan taken later, sat on the lap of a beaming Liston, with Peter puffing away on a big cigar.

    I wish I could recall the source and to confirm it was Peter Keenan but I definitely read it once and it stuck. It's the quintessential Sonny story; all badass on the outside but just wants to be liked in the end.

    So, in answer to the question, I'll take wee Peter over all your behemoths. Small Scots who fight dirty get a lot of respect here in England. It's been that way since Bannockburn.

    If I knew that Sonny Liston had been looking to beat me up for a long time, and I knew that he was in a bar drunk and smoking weed, I would wait for him to come outside and then I would shoot him in the head twice.
    Honest to God, what the actual hell?

    If you could dig that out, Grey, my respect for you - already right up there - would go through the roof as if it were some giant American heavyweight, objecting to a Scottish bantamweight having a cigar!

    Lennox Lewis. Pretty sure he could really scrap on the street and he's a hell of a lot bigger than Liston
