Who would you rank higher, Rex Layne or Canelo Alvarez?

Odd question, and it may seem obvious in Canelo's favor at first, but let me explain:

    1. We live in the 7 belt era. Canelo being world champ doesn't mean anything. Layne would've been a champion.

    2. While Canelo has beaten GGG, it was an extremely controversial decision. And if we look at Layne's resume, Ezzard Charles, Joe Walcott (both came in overweight but the wins still stand), and a KO of Bob Satterfield in the 8th. All convincing wins over competition you'd rank probably equal to GGG if not over.

    3. Losses. Canelo lost (what should've been, but one of the refs were blind or payed off) a wide decision to Floyd Mayweather. Layne's prime only has losses to David Whitlock, which he avenged twice, in the last fight, knocking Whitlock down multiple times. And we all know his destruction by the hands of Marciano. Layne was never the same after that fight, so we'll describe the next losses as "shot Layne"

Shot, missing teeth, overweight Layne lost a few more times. Once to a close decision against Roland LaStarza, and twice to Ezzard Charles, though he also beat Charles once. The next fights he lost aren't even worth mentioning. Label those under "super shot in desperate need of money" Layne.

All in all I'd say that Canelo Alvarez is Layne's equivalent in terms of p4p greatness.

The Rex Layne that brutally knocked out Battling Bob Satterfield is a H2H monster.

    On that night he beats:

    Vitali Klitschko
    Wladimir Klitschko
    David Tua
    David Haye
    Povetkin
    Holyfield
    Jack Dempsey
    Floyd Patterson

    Loses to:

    Ali
    Louis
    Tyson
    Holmes
    Foreman
    Lewis
    Battling Jim Johnson
    Gene Tunney
    Riddick Bowe

Rex Layne before Marciano ruined him was one hell of a fighter and was cheated out of his title shot if I remember. Defense was never good and over time his chin just couldn’t take shots like in his younger years. That being said I would rank Canelo higher. I personally thought he won both GGG fights although both were very close w the first one going either way would have been fine.

Yeah Layne is underrated. I rank him in his prime along the lines of Luis Firpo, James Braddock, Nino Valdes, Jack Sharkey, Jerry Quarry, Tom Sharkey and Harry Wills

I personally believe that GGG won the first one, and that the second one was a tie

That's a good post by the OP but I feel Canelo's skills are way better than Rex's. That's without considering resume etc.

    Canelo Alvarez, obviously.

Hell, Canelo Alvarez might've actually beaten Rex Layne if they'd gotten in the ring together.

Alvarez weighs close to 180 or more by the time he steps in the ring.

Alvarez might possibly UD over 12 rounds (though Layne could catch a win as well) but I think Layne KO's him over 15

Doubtful about the 180 statement. He was a Welterweight for a good amount of time

I mean I feel like I made a pretty good comparison.

What I really wanna see is Crawford vs Alvarez rn. Tbh Canelo hasn't really proved anything to me, other than his ability to pay off judges and take steroids and still not be able to beat guys like GGG or Mayweather

Thats how i see it. If were comparing fighters that are not only different eras but different weight classes, you cant only look at their wins on paper, you have to look at the actually skills and stats they displayed in the ring. For example, alexander povetkin has earned more money and had a more succesful career (based on win/loss ratio) than jersey joe walcott, but walcott is more skilled relative to his era based on film observation.

I personally think canelo won the first ggg fight and lost the second, but even with 2 losses in his prime, that was against elite p4p monsters. You have to make too many exemptions and excuses for layne to compare him to canelo.

No he wasn't. He was a big 154 by the time he fought Mosley at age 21.
He looked easily 15lbs probably more heavier than Cotto who was probably 160 give or take a few pounds in the ring.
He visibly had 15+ lbs on Khan who was noticeably fleshier than he was at welterweights so.

Canelo is about as stocky and muscular as it gets for a 5'8 fighter

Mike Tyson was 215-218 in his best shape at 5'10

Canelo at 5'8 could easily be 180 in the ring. David lemieux is 180 in the ring
