Casuals missed one heck of a fight between Fonfara and Cleverly. The fight broke Holyfield vs Qawi for most punches thrown in the LH Division. Fonfara's harder and more telling punches gave him the victory. Overall, was a good night for boxing fans...
It was a masterpiece and Clev did a hell of a lot better than people thought he would.....just like I predicted he would:deal It should have been a draw in my opinion.
Hell, Gabe Rosado's stock has gone up 4 or 5 losses in a row now, he's getting movie deals; a couple of more losses and he'll be in the hall of fame.
I didn't keep score, and until the 10th round I thought Fonfara was losing the fight, a draw or Fonfara close decision seems the most fair score
More importantly, having all that and very little talent makes his opponent's promoters want to schedule him, as a "game loser who put up a good fight."
:nod And it also proves something else, his chin is far better than Stevenson's, Stevenson went down on the first clean glancing blow Fonfara landed and Nathan took 474 shots many of them flush with out going down. Yet Kovalev dropped him 4 times, I wonder how many times Stevenson goes down in 4 rounds against the Krusher.......who am I kidding Adonis doesn't make it out of the first round.:hey
Cleverly sadly is featherfisted. In this division you cant go far while having so low punching power, unless of course Ward moves up and proves me wrong but until then ...yeah.
Well he was coming up from being very lightly regarded after getting destroyed by Kovalev and then losing to Bellew, a guy Stevenson blew away. As long as he was competitive it was going to raise his stock. Cleverly did as I expected, came in crouching with a high guard looking to work inside. Usually this approach doesn't work this well but this time he had a taller opponent so this style would work on Fonfara as he likes to adopt the high guard and trade in close as well and give up his advantages in height and reach like Cleverly does. But the difference showed when Fonfara took a step back in the final minute of the 3rd round. He created that extra bit of space and used it to catch Cleverly on the way in and then he started to use angles and step to the side and rip in hooks to the head and body with Cleverly out of position. The difference between the 2 became very apparent when Fonfara started using his height and reach and superior boxing skills from range. Cleverly is the faster fighter, he's a decent athlete but he gives up all his physical advantages which is a shame, it's probably to late in the game now to correct all his flaws and get the best out of his talent.
