I know popularity contests aren't the big thing around here, but I'm curious.

As a man, as a fighter, whatever. Who do you prefer? Say a few words about why if you like.

James Toney is about as unlikeable as they come. Jones seems really cool on commentary.

Nah, he was really likable back in the day. He was a pantomime villain surrounded by women, his Mrs., his manager, his daughter, his mother...he was really likeable in those days. OK, he eventually threatened to shoot his manager and took off for her house with a gun, but still...

Also, Jones is mad as **** too, and likes rooster fights etc., so he's pretty mental also. Agree with you about him in commentary though. Apart from when he fell out with old Larry.

I think Roy would be cooler to hang out with. As a fighter i'm more of a Toney fan. I just love natural fighters who can do what they do just getting out of bed.

I'm only 22 so I wasn't really around in the early to mid 90s to judge a prime Toney, but in recent years he has shown himself to be a complete tool. Jones, although stubborn, does seem to be quite a nice guy, and is very impressive on commentary.

In terms of fighting styles, I prefer Toney.

Even back in the day when Toney used to cut about with Mike??

Anyone know what they (inevitably) fell out about?

Toney's a boorish arsehole who's tough guy schtick wore out its welcome as soon as Roy spanked him imo. Deep down he may be alright but the way he treated Jackie Kallen and the garbage he constantly talks about other fighters is stupid and boring and it amazes me that anyone could find his talk funny or endearing.

Jones always seemed like a decent guy to me and whilst arrogant was never unnecessarily mean or nasty although his showboating in the ring was a tad tiresome. All in all a better fighter and bloke than James though.

Big fan of both, Jones as a fighter, both have egos, but at least egos with a little humour, unlike say Hopkins or Mayweather. I like Toney's 'old school' mentality, studying Walcott, Marciano and Moore. I like him claiming superiority over Hopkins as an old school boxer. Really like Jones commentary, would be interesting to have Toney commentate with his knowledge, but he's probably too slurry to make it work

Sort of agree with the 'pantomime villain' although Toney relishes the trash talking. Sometimes crass sometimes funny, especially when he gives insight. In his private life he's supposed to be a big family man. Outside of that, used to chat to someone from his home town who reckoned Toney was broke

The main thing I dislike about Toney is his discipline, although that in a way makes him affable. Showing up out of shape and beating a HW Titlist. Imagine if he stayed in shape, he wouldn't need steroids. We could have seen Toney against Darius, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Vitali, Byrd, Tarver. I reckon he'd have taken Darius and would have walked Vitali down and made a close fight of that, that would have been a fight in 04

Toney was Vitali's number 1 contender.

Vitali chose to fight Danny Williams instead.

Would have been a very intriguing fight back then.

Roy for me, much more likeable and looked more unbeatable at is peak. I love Toney though, his defence is the best to watch.

Almost all recollections i've heard of people meeting Toney outside the ring were nice.

He snapped his achilles after Holyfield though, came back and beat Ruiz and tested positive for Nandrolone, which is the dumbest steroid to get caught with as it takes about 18months to come out your system. James obviously didn't have a clue what he was doing with the juice, he should of got some tips of Brewster or 1 of his juicing buddies who doesn't get caught

I think it's a shame that fight never happened, Toney was 1 of the few guys who knew how to take away a jab

Toney, I don´t think is serious at all with his behaviour, guess it´s just a game for him.
