While most of the boxing world had its eyes on Kovalev's struggle for redemption (inside the ring, anyhow) there was a flare-up in Buenos Aires. Francisco Emanuel "Pancho" Torres defeated countryman Alan Emmanuel Castaño (brother of current WBA super welterweight champ Brian Carlos, and long considered to be, if not Argentina's biggest ace-in-the-hole prospect, then very nearly and on that shortlist ever since the amateurs) via UD over 10 rounds, depriving him of his professional zero in the process. This was the quarterfinals stage of the "Carlos Monzón Super 8 middleweight tournament"...in which the previously unbeaten Castaño was the favored #1 seed. Castaño famously iced Fabián Andrés Maidana in the amateurs, impressing the brother of "TNT" so much that Marcos (aka "Chino") immediately began managing him as well. Maidana, ironically, also lost his zero this year, upset last month via UD10 himself by tricky veteran Jaider Parra.
Yeah, they're calling it the "Carlos Monzón Super 8 middleweight tournament"..joint venture between Samson Lefkowicz & the WBC.
Something tells me none of the "Super 8" are going to quite fill Monzón's shoes as the next great Argentinian middleweight, though.
This content is protected Still can't find a full upload anywhere, but suffice to say from the couple of slightly different HL packages floating around, it appears Castaño got his ass handed to him.
