I proposed Abraham because after seeing the Barker fight, it made me wonder if that high guard style that Abraham has would be a serious problem for Martinez. I thought it would make for a very intriguing matchup, and it would also be a good way for Martinez to test the waters above 160 by going for a catchweight fight with Abraham. It would also be a nice way for Abraham to begin the process of settling back into a weight class better for him. Abraham's career at 168 is over, and he said that 160 was nearly impossible for him to make. An offer for 164 might be just what suits both fighters.
I was thinking just that, Pirog is the most relevant guy out there but Abraham's style could provide a very good fight.
Let's say he got a fight with Mayweather or Pac. How much does he think he would get as a purse? Ortiz got only $2.5 million, I'm not sure he if he received any PPV revenue, if so I'd guess he received maybe like 5-10% because Mayweather would want the great majority of that. Ortiz also brought a good size Mexican/Mexican-American base to follow him. Sergio, now, got about $1.5 million for Saturday's fight and is supposed to get here on, about $2.3 million guaranteed per fight. He brings no fanbase whatsoever. He's Middleweight champ, yes so if he is looking for huge purse, what is he looking to get? Pavlik when he was champ I think his guarantees was around $2 million and some and he brought the Youngstown, white working class constituency with him. The promotion would be based all around Floyd/Pac majorly. If he fought Floyd, and this would be funny, the weigh-in would probably consist as the majority of FMJ's fans and probably for the fight itself. When was the last time Floyd was granted that kind of faithful backdrop for a fight? Just something to think about.
Hopkins didnt bring any fanbase and isnt a draw but yet his purse was 17 million dollars plus ppv bonus vs de la hoya. Floyd ppv draw is very close to oscar and floyd makes around 20 millions maybe more. Ortiz 2 million might be his biggest payday but ortiz isnt in the top ten p4p and only has 1 big win. Martinez however like hopkins is the mw king clearly and has ko bigger fighters then him 3 in a row and martinez is top 3 p4p. If Hopkins can get around 17 million with no fanbase and no drawing power then martinez can easily get either 8 million or 10 million fighting floyd.
I figured that Mayweather and Pac should be big enough by now that they don't need a partner to consistently draw 1 million+ buys. I mean, Martinez is probably somewhat more popular than Clottey and much more highly regarded. If Clottey-Pacquiao still did 700,000 buys, Mayweather going for the MW title against the #3 P4P should be a million+ regardless of the lack of fan base. That's exactly what DLH-Hopkins did under the exact same set of circumstances.
I'd like to see Cotto vs Martinez. Earlier in the year, it was being discussed for Sergio to fight Junior, but that fight seems like it won't materialize.
Bute Margarito or Cotto are not going anywhere near Martinez , the winner of that fight will fight Chavez Jr :deal If Martinez cannot land a fight with Bute any of the following would be interesting : Pirog Angulo Martirosyan Lara Geale
I don't think you could call it dipping 2 classes down. I don't think he's a natural middleweight to start with. I think he's more of a light middleweight so I reckon he wouldn't have too much trouble fighting at a catch weight just above welter. Essentially he's already made a 'jump' to 160 so I think 170 could be considered too much of a jump. I wouldn't blame him and I wouldn't accuse him of 'avoiding' Hopkins.
If he can't fight Pac or May he needs a name. Cotto, Margo, Sturm, Chavez Jr., Canelo, and AA are good. Fighters he MUST avoid: Pirog (extremely low-reward, high-risk) and Angulo (moderately good reward but high-risk)
He may have no choice but to fight Pirog. I wonder if the Barker thing might have made him a little gunshy about taking on top contenders while waiting for the big fights. Problem is if he decides to just feast on bums or total inactivity, he's not building his stock at all, and if he never gets the 2-3 fights he wants, his prime will be gone and he'll have nothing to show for it. He has to have faith in his abilities that as a #3 P4P that nobody can beat him, not even Pirog, and just go for the fight. History will look more kindly on him that way if he never gets the super-fight he wants.
Floyd or cotto. Barker is not a big me but Sergio was again the smaller man. He can go up to Ms like a Hopkins went to lhw, but he should not do so before taking care of business at his own weight which is around 152.
