    ..<Flip's a Coin>..

    "El Terrible" Erick Morales..
(Big fan of both, Tho I choose side's when they matched up against eachother....
I always went Marco Antonio Barrerra, Go figure, that's how even they were.)

Barrera, no doubt about it. Better resume and better fighter, period.

Just glad to see that this poll isn't one sided and that both fighters are getting the props they deserve.

In my mind Greatness is measured by accomplishments coupled with ability. (with more emphasis on accomoplishments then ability)

(BTW: Ability I consider a measure of a fighters overall likely hood of victory, it is an imalgimation of skills like foot work, technique, stamina, versitility etc.. and intangibles like desire, work ethic and mentality.)

    ----------

    Barrera

Titles: 3x WBO Super Bantamweight champ, WBC featherweight champ, WBC Super Featherweight Champ, and IBF super featherweight champ.

Lost to: Junior Jones twice (never avenged), once to Morales, once to JMM (also never avenged), and twice he has got his ass kicked by PAC.

His notable wins: Beat Kennedy McKinney in a life and death war (think this was the first BAD), took the series win over Morales, beat Hamed pretty convincingly, and beat kevin kelly, paulie ayala, and Johny Tapia.

So basically he's a three division world champion with notable wins from the beginning to late middle periods of his career. His best victories are over Morales and Hamed. With the Hamed victory probably being his best victory because of the way he beat him. Problems being that he lost to Junior Jones twice in his prime, to Morales in his prime and got TKOed by pac in his prime (or at least pretty close to his prime).

    EM

Titles: WBC Super Bantam weight champ, WBO super bantamweight champ, 2x WBC featherweight champ, WBC super featherweight champ, and IBF super featherweight champ.

Lost to: Barrera twice, PAC twice, David diaz, and Zahir Raheam.

Has wins over: Daniel Zaragoza, Junior Jones, MAB, Kevin Kelly, Paulie Ayala, Jesus Chavez, and PAC.

Is a three division champion. Lost close decisions to MAB in his prime (or one in his prime and the other close enough to his prime for the purposes of this thread), lost to Raheam and got knocked out twice by pac in his late career. His most impressive win is over Pac.

    -------

So how does it all line up interms of greatness.

Comparing ability between the two is a pretty dicy affair because in essence you have to decide how to evaluate Barrera's ability, given that he was a completely different fighter in the second half of his career. You could give him a lot of credit for having the versitility to change but he did lose a lot of his desire to win, which given greatness is what we are considering pretty much negates any props given for versitility. At all points in his career Erik morales dominated the intagibles (even in catagories like effective ring general ship). Barrera probably nics him in terms of skills though. I'd give the overall edge in ability to Morales but not by much.

Things start to get a little more obvious when you consider how their resume's line up in terms of accomplishments (some of you might be suprised by this by the way)

MAB probably fought the better comp while in his prime but he also had four losses while in his prime, one was by split decision to EM, three were not close and one was by technical knock out. Morales' prime losses were to MAB. Both of his losses were close losses. And he never touched the canvas (officially) in his prime which is saying something given his fighting style. And I feel that his win over PAc at the end of his career was more impressive then MAB's win over Hamed. Barrera I has to be given credit for his two wins over Morales but to me thats not enough to get MAB past the fact that he lost three times convincingly in the prime of his career. So my ranking is Erik Morales then Marco Antonio Barrera.

Morales has the better resume, but not by much.

Barrera beat him twice so he ranks higher in the toe-to-toe basis. Because of this, I rank MAB higher than EM.

No ****. The problem is that most of these guys on here only remember each of these fighters from after they fought each other and on. They don't bother looking at the other half of their primes which happened before they faced eachother. People need to watch more of their super bantamwieght days before making a call on who the better fighter was. Back then EM was a ****ing destroyer.

That last fight wasn't close. Many, like I, had it 8 rounds to 4 for Barrera and that was a slightly past his prime version of Marco Antonio versus a still formidable, and prime Morales. Barrera is the better more complete of the two fighters, I don't think there's any questioning that.

I'd agree with your assessment of the seiries when comparing greatness. I don't get into hypotheticals, simply because I don't know enough about the hypotheticals of all fighters. Marco won the series, can't take that away from him.

Marco was also the more versitile fighter. But being the more versitile fighter doesn't make one the more complete fighter. Versitility is just one aspect of what you call being a complete fighter and what I call ability.

Add to that when you want to rank them is terms of greatness you still have to factor in tangible accomplishments with the intangibles. And frankly MAB just can't get past the fact that he got his ass handed to him three times in the prime. Thats a pretty big deal for a "great fighter". Not saying that MAB isn't great but he wasn't as great as Morales.
