Wilfredo Benitez (Champion from 1976-1978 )

Notable wins at 140: Antonio Cervantez, Emiliano Villa, Tony Petronelli, Ray Chavez Guerrero

    Ricky Hatton (Champion since 2005)

Notable wins at 140: Ben Tackie, Michael Stewart, Kostya Tszyu, Carlos Maussa (had beaten Harris), Jose Luis Castillo.

Both reigned in their divisions for approx. the same amount of time. Both defended the 140 titles 3 times. Both defeated other great fighters (Cervantez, Tszyu....but Tszyu was better) and defended against contenders that were nothing special, though Hatton destroyed Castillo (who was Ring #1 contender at 140).

Hatton has more names in his resume (at 140). Benitez conquered the title when he was very young (does it really matter?).

When will the Hatton madness end? Do you really have to ask who was greater?

And yeah Benitez is an ATG where as Hatton is no where near.

    its not really a comparison.

It's like comparing someone like Cotto to SRL.

    Wait.

At 140, facts show that Benitez was not much greater than Hatton. It's not opinion.

Who thinks that wins over Cervantez, Ray Guerrero and Emiliano Villa are greater than wins over Tszyu, Castillo and Tackie?

Fact: They have dominated for approximately the same amount of time.
Fact: Hatton has more "names" in his resume.

DUDE, were not talking resume, we're talking about COMMON SENSE................geesh, sometimes I see why fighters fight over the hill fighters like Tszyu (who never fought again) and Castillo (who never fought major competition again), just to put names on their "RESUMES" so that they can be mentioned with ATGs like Benitez.:nut

Ok. But who did Benitez face? Ray Guerrero, Emiliano Villa, Chris Fernandez?

Everyone should forget one moment the "Benitez is an ATG" dogma and analyze their competition at 140.

They both looked great with their styles. And sometimes they were boring.

(And yes, of course Benitez is greater P4P because of what he did at 147 and 154)

I hear you boss and I respect you alot, but fighters move up and down in weights all the time, so I tend to judge it more on H2H as opposed to "resumes" because sometimes they can be so skewed.....

If you say who's the GREATER LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT, I'm inclined to say Hatton, but if you ask who's the GREATER FIGHTER, I'm  at you......

I tend to consider the toe-to-toe basis, but give more importance to the achievements and resume.

Of course Benitez is the greater fighter; he was successful in three division...impressive.

By the way, I'm not a Hatton fan.

I agree with you, I'm just saying that "achievements" i.e., "names" can be misleading.

You and I know in 10 years Hatton will get "EXTRA CREDIT" for beating 2 "names" who were not only on the downward spiral of their careers, but were NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN.:good

    Head-to-head, Benitez outshines Hatton easily.

    Achievement-wise, Hatton wins.
