Dawson took on the best fighters available. You cant say the same about Sturm. When Dawson got that win over Johnson, putting him at the top of 175, he took every advantage of that exposure and has been fighting the best. Sturm had no desire to capitalize on his exposure with the highly disputed loss to DLH. He could have chased a hopkins fight but he didnt, Dawson wanted the Hopkins fight and everyone else available.

Chad Dawson has incredible boxing ability, he's just yet to show he has a fighters heart and good conditioning.

Well Im sure this thread is inspired from one of my threads.
Now lets look at Dawson and Sturm.
Dawsons big wins are over 2 fighters 14-15 years older than him. One of those fighters has double figure losses and the other lost to that fighter. Dawsons next big win is Adamek who wasnt a great LHW by any standard. Dawson has a good win over Diaconu, who was beaten twice previously by Pascal, but that is about it really.

Sturm doesnt have the marquee names but
Then look at Sturms MW title wins consisting of -
B Schenk former WBO MW champ
J Castillo WBA MW champ (2 weight champ)
S Sylvester became IBF MW champ became champ after losing to Sturm

    plus other names -
H Cherifi past his best former WBC MW champ
G Lorenzo alledged future Pavlik opponent
K Gevor title challenger at MW & SMW
    K Sato (undefeated)
    R Griffin
    J Pittman (undefeated)
    N G Alcoba (undefeated)
    M Maseo
    R Varon
    H J Velazco
    M Macklin

Sturm looked unlucky to many against De La Hoya who is considered a big win for Hopkins after Sturm had looked unlucky against him.

To me it would be Sturm,

If Hopkins was still at MW, I would say Sturm would give Hopkins the most trouble, but you cant say now as Sturm doesnt fight at LHW, which would favour Hopkins

Dawson is the better fighter. When he is at his best he is a joy to watch technically.

With his recent victory, Antonio Tarver is being mentioned with the all time greats.

Dawson beat him twice, pretty handily. That and the victories over Adamek and Johnson far surpasses anything done by Sturm.

    Fair enough.
I think at MW, Sturm would give Hopkins more problems than Dawson would have, had he been able to stay at MW. At LHW I cant comment.
As for better fighter, to me its Sturm, even though I am no real fan of Sturm and prefer watching Dawson.

    Regarding resume though:
    Glen Johnson twice
    Adrian diaconu
    Antonio Tarver twice
    Tomasz Adamek
    Eric Harding

Were all good wins for Dawson, id Dawson an edge in that category of resume. Even though the TS's question was regarding boxing ability.

Dont get me wrong SOKings but G Johnson was a double figure losses glorified journeyman who had a sudden good run over weak champs
Tarver wasnt great and was exposed greatly by Hopkins and couldnt beat the worst version of Jones at first ask.
Adamek never did much at LHW
Harding well Im surprised you noted him.

Dawsons best win to me is over Diaconu who fell short twice against Pascal, though Dawsons best name wins consist of 2 fighters over a decade older than him and a supposedly weight drained Adamek
