I no each has got there positive and negitives and theres a lot more orthodox fighters but overall who are the best fighters and why? Being a southpaw I think southpaws have it because they seem to have an edge over orthodox and most of southpaws fights are against orthodox fighters. What do you guys think?
I think it depends on the individual to be honest. There are a lot of top quality orthodox fighters, such as Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins etc, and top quality southpaws such as Joe Calzaghe and Manny Pacquiao. Let's not forget switch hitters such as Junior Witter, either. Certain fighters look great against other styles, whether this be their stance, speed, aggression etc. For instance, until last month, Hopkins was unbeaten against southpaws and ate them for breakfast, while Ricky Hatton is also unbeaten, but an average southpaw makes him look like a club fighter! I haven't seen enough southpaw vs southpaw fights to be able to compare them if i'm honest. Switch hitters would be a nightmare though - Witter often makes fighters look bad, whilst Miguel Cotto was switching against Gomez - whether he uses this in future we will see.
There's no advantage at all..it's all to do with how a boxer adapts. You need to box differently against someone with a different stance but so do they! There really is no difference.
There is nothing more hesitating for a conventional fighter than a southpaw with a good jab. Although if we talk about top fighters I guess most of the time it doesn't make much difference, as it was mentioned in the previous post you always have time to adapt yourself. But if Winky or Pernell had orthodox stance they certainly wouldn't do as much as they did....
Southpaws struggle just as much against fellow southpaws. I agree with what was said earlier though, dont think it makes a difference really, its all about how the other guys adapts!
