Slappy Joe? The guy had some ATG grit, toughness, but that stamina was unreal. A southpaw that could box, brawl, infight, volume puncher, he was any boxers nightmare. I think of Calzaghe more of a physical freak similar to Roy Jones in his prime, who were so good nobody could beat them. Of course Rj more of a boxer puncher and JC more of a non-stop punching machine who would wear most fighters down.
I have to go with B-Hop on this one. However, one other name that should be of mention more often here is Wlad Klitschko im not the biggest fan of the Klitschkos, but the man is a ring genius.
GOAT? That's a tough one and hard to quantify. My personal opinion; I'd also go with a guy like Hopkins because he has average talent as far as physical gifts (not a big puncher, not particularly fast, etc) but is still near the top of his game close to 50 years old. Some of the other guys mentioned (like Mayweather, Calzaghe, K-Bros, etc) have/had world class talent to go along with high ring IQ.
SRL isn't that smart, if his ring IQ was that good he wouldn't have gotten in the ring with Hagler. Floyd = #1 Floyd would have dodge a fight like that. Great ring IQ start outside the ring yep.
Who shocked the world? Who slew the big bad bear? Who said your hands can't hit what your eyes can't see? Who brought trash talking to boxing, and did it in rhymes? Who rumbled in the jungle? Who thrilled ya in Manila? Who made them hate him so much they'd pay anything to see him knocked out? Who gave you the Ali shuffle? Who gave you the rope a dope? Who floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee? Who fought The Big Ugly Bear? The Rabbit? The Washer Woman? The Octopus? The Beast? The Gorilla? The Dancing Hippo? The Mummy? The Acorn? Dracula? The Peanut? "If you want to lose your money, bet on Sonny." "Sonny Liston smells like a big, ugly bear. After I whup him, I'm gonna donate him to a zoo!" "I outwit them and then I outhit them." "Bad, fast! Fast! Fast! Last night I cut the light off in my bedroom, hit the switch and was in the bed before the room was dark." "I've seen George Foreman shadow boxing, and the shadow won!"
My winners would be: Willie Pep Ricardo Lopez Jack Johnson Carlos Monzon (already mentioned him in my previous post) I would love to see some tape of Greb, Loughran, and Fitzsimmons. From this era of still active fighters the standouts are clearly Mayweather, Marquez, and Hopkins; all of which I believe are seriously in this conversation along with ATG's of decades past. He's known as being a puncher but I really think Joe Louis showed more ring IQ than most ATG HW's in history have...
