@Xplosive's greater/better treads made me think about these two great (and bit underrated) fly's. TWO 3-x champions with rich resume. Who was greater?
Great question. I think both guys fit nicely in the 10-20 at flyweight, but that wins over Canto, Oguma, Vargas, Espadas and Mathebula are more impressive than McGowan, Burruni, Villacampo, Torres and Hanagata. Neither was particularly consistent, and so both have pretty embarrassing losses. Chionoi moreso. Betulio may have had the **** kicked out of him by Borkhorsor, but Bus Stop is arguably the best flyweight ever. I don't really hold that against him. However, it's hard to look over Chionoi's losses to Mojica, Prado, Proso &; whereas Betulio's losses were basically all to world level opposition. They also have a few common opponents. Obviously both fought Oba, where Gonzalez did a bit better, they both fought Salavarria too. Salavarria drew with Betulio, and blew Chartchai out in two. Yep, for me, it's Betulio. I'd have picked him to win as well. I think his pressure fighting and aggressive counter-punching with that granite chin is awful for Chionoi. Think Torres but better and tougher.
Both Top-15 and I don't have a whole lot in it. But, Gonzalez ranks above Chionoi, for mine. @George Crowcroft has outlined most of the reasons why this is a reasonable position. Gonzalez being on the losing end of a trilogy with Canto, with the two defeats being suffered in valiant efforts, is better than anything Chionoi achieved and better performances overall - and by some margin.
For me it's 50-50. But I think most posters underestimate Chionoi's resume (which includes many good names). And Betulio's draw vs Salavarria, wins over Espadas and even Canto 1 were disputed
Chionoi - clear and present, like danger. I think there's a little bit of distance. But Betulio was very beautiful and has the single best win.
Gonzalez, and fairly clearly. Better resume, more consistent, and just a more skilled, versatile fighter than the limited, overachieving Chionoi .
Was the win over Canto disputed? The only newspaper report on it that I've seen had Gonzalez winning without controversy. Gonzalez got a gift draw against Oguma as well, but the fight that he lost to Oguma could have gone either way, so I guess that evens out. Definitely an interesting question posed, as the two men had broadly similar careers. Both showed resilience in making it back to the top late in the game when they had much less mobility than earlier on. I think I'd pick Gonzalez, because he just seems more solid. Fewer upset losses (as noted above) and much harder to hurt/KO. Picking an actual fight between them would be a nightmare. Gonzalez loved using his strength to bully/control opponents, and I don't see that happening with Chionoi.
I don't know until we don't have full fight, but I heard about disputed result from other People. Though, I'm not implying... Also most of Betulio's loses were close. Maybe he BEAT Laciar in that fight (Who knows)...
