What do you like better, longevity or brilliance? Holmes is more accomplished, Floyd is more talented.

I love how people are in one sentence criticizing Floyd for not facing the best opposition and all the other worthy guys out there (fair criticism), and then in the next praising LARRY HOLMES as if he's sort of standard to hold in these areas.

Do people even know how many WBA champs/top Ring rated contenders that Holmes failed to face? How many guys who gave Holmes hell and did not get a rematch? How much Holmes was cherry-picking once he was close to Rocky Marciano's record? As someone said on the classic forum, he was facing embryos by this time.

    Be consistent in your criticism.

Yeah, I think Holmes gets his credit for the most part among boxing hardcore fans as a great fighter.

It's the casual public who may underappreciate/underrate Holmes (much like they do Michael Spinks).

Also, 2Pac ruined the lasting image of Holmes for a lot of people.

It is hard to be appreciated if the fighter that replace you is one named Cassius Clay (for Foreman).

Just as Larry Holmes will always be underappreciated especially when he replaced a fighter named Muhammad Ali.

When you say longevity do you mean at the highest level for the longest period of time? Because Holmes fought from 1973 - 2002 but he was dominate for only about half that time. Floyd has had 16 years of dominance so I can get to that!

Why, are you also in denial that Floyd has beaten women?

No doubt my man about Holmes making a top 5 case but you have to take in to consideration the different eras and the role that the sport played at that time in the media. I get the comparison because Floyd has fought at the highest level for 16 years now. Holmes for about 10 outta the 19 years he fought. I think that's why some give Floydie the edge. Yes Holmes might have seen stiffer compettion in his era but this kind of competition wasn't and isn't available to Floyd.

What? In his pro career, PBF did not fight top level opponents until very late in the 90s.
Unless you are qualifying Jesus Chavez and Tony Duran as top level competition.

That being said, that is not really a point of criticism because all pros must start somewhere. You don't start at the top.

But to imply he somehow was beating up top 5 of each weight division from day 1 is utterly silly.

There are stiffer opponents available for PBF - MArg, Cotto, Pac, younger Mosley, Martinez, PWill, etc. etc. etc.

I am not saying it is his fault that he had not face them but to say his competition is lack is utterly silly. He does not have to beat up Ali level competition but there are legit fighters out there that can elevate his resume.

Holmes had his "Castillo moment" against Tits Witherspoon but didn't re-match him.
