I truly believe that had Floyd got the same balls as Oscar, he'd have took some losses too. Look at how many guys Oscar fought that are better than ANYONE on Floyd's resume: Whitaker Trinidad Quartey (IMO a better fighter than JL Castillo, but this is debatable - the others on this list aren't) Mosley (who he fought twice) Hopkins Mayweather himself Pacquiao All of these fights were tougher than ALL of Floyd's fights. Floyd's toughest opponents were Castillo, Corrales, a past-prime Oscar and a past-prime Shane. If Floyd had fought a past-prime but still very skilled Whitaker, prime destroyers like Tito and Mosley, a very difficult proposition with an ATG jab like Quartey, a far bigger and heavier ATG mw like B-Hop, and two smaller but younger & fresher p4p#1's like Floyd and Pac, I guarantee you that Floyd would have lost more than just the one fight to Castillo that he did deserve to lose in his career. deal:deal
Problem is, with the exception of Bernard Hopkins. Floyd beats all those fighters. In any case it doesnt matter. Considering you dont count losses in terms of how great a fighter is, you count victories. There are special circumstances like Marquez vs Pacquiao. Considering what Pacquiao has become, but the point remains. And please, lets not for one minute start to say anybody was saying DLH was up against it when he fought Pacquiao the first time lol. Or that he was massively over matched when he was fighting Mayweather at 154 who had exactly 2 fights at welterweight prior. Oh and lets not like act like he fought the best welterweight Vernon forrest, or the best junior middleweight Winky Wright either. The triumverate of Tito, Oscar and Mosley overshadow 2 superior fighters in Wright and Forrest.
Except he doesn't. Floyd went 1-1 with Jose Luis Castillo at lightweight, so the very idea that it's a foregone conclusion he goes undefeated vs Whitaker, Trinidad, Mosley, Quartey, Pacquiao etc at welterweight is utterly ridiculous.
Stop it. Mayweather was 24 years old, his first fight at lightweight, injured, coming up against the best lightweight of the decade and he won a close decision that could of gone either way. To compare the two would be comparing the Pacquiao of now to the Pacquiao who lost to Eric Morales the first time. I can see the Mayweather that fought Oscar, still not a welterweight yet struggling and possibly losing to Tito and Mosley. But not this Mayweather that walked Mosley down and muscled him all over the ring. Neither Tito or Mosley would have the skills to compete. And Quartey? Please. Pacquiao is the only one who could beat this version of Mayweather.
Because Floyd is an all-around great fighter. And both Tito and Mosley were dominated by boxers. And Floyd is the most skilled boxer of this era, who is now a true welterweight and not a small man anymore. Now if you had said the real cream of the crop of this silver age of welterweight boxing n Forrest and Winky wright I'd probably lean towards Wright and 50/50 Forrest. Tito and Mosley are a little overrated. ATG's, but not the fighters they are always made out to be.
Nonsense. :nut Mayweather, much like Roy Jones and Ray Leonard, was one of those fighters who was as good in his younger days as he ever got. The Floyd who beat Corrales was as accomplished as the Floyd who beat Mosley. Floyd may have changed since then, but he has not greatly improved, he has merely adapted to a different weight and to the effects of age. If you can't see how that is different from the massive, massive improvements that Pacquiao has made since 2003-2005, I suggest you watch more boxing. Calm down. Shane Mosley was old and tired when he fought Floyd. That was proven in Shane's next fight when he couldn't impose himself on Sergio ****ing Mora. If you think Floyd 2010 could "walk down and muscle" the Shane Mosley of 2000, I suggest you check into rehab to dry out, you're ****ed up. An old, toothless OLDH with suspect stamina gave Floyd serious problems with his jab. Ike Quartey's jab was better than ODLH's. It is not a foregone conclusion that Floyd beats Quartey. If Floyd fought all of these guys, some of them more than once, as Oscar did, he would incur some losses. The guy lost to Jose Luis Castillo at lightweight. That alone should highlight how stupid it is to say he would definitely go undefeated at ww vs prime versions of Mosley, Tito and Quartey (well, the Quartey who fought Oscar was a bit past his best, but still).
We arent talking about accomplished we are referring to the fact this was a young kid 24 years old moving up to face a beast in Castillo while injured. The prime of most fightes is not 24. I'd put Floyds athletic prime somewhere around the Arturo Gatti fight. However I think he is now more complete then he has ever been. He is a big skilled fighter now. Not a small skilled fighter who could at the very least be bullied. Those days are over as shown when he pushed Mosley back again and again and again. Literally you'd have to be saying this floyd would lose to a 135lb Castillo. :nut Hell 1 fight later Floyd won a clear decision. What have PAcquiaos massive improvements been besides becomign bigger and stronger? He still looks like a battered woman after ever fight? Or do you think him beating left handed B level boxers is somehow mastering the technical side of boxing? Didnt Roach mention how he was now complete and would beat Marquez the second time before getting his ass kicked again? Sergio Mora ran from Shane. Floyd stood right in front of Shane like Margarito. Yet didnt get destroyed like Margarito. Instead he bullied Shane like Shane was the former super featherwieght. Mosley has always struggled with boxers. Sergio Mora's a ****ing middleweight at that. :nut It'd be a more difficult task. But the ending would be the same. DLH gave Floyd problems because he was a 150lb fighter who was visibly sluggish fighting a guy who came into the ring around 160. In the end Oscar landed a paltry % of his jab, Floyd landed far more of his jab and while throwing more jabs then he threw in the first 4 rounds in the last 4 he was swept in the championship rounds. DLH is still a far bigger more dynamic fighter then Ike Quartey ever was. And Floyd wins wide. A guy who struggled with far inferior fighters then Mayweather. The only guy stylistically, physically, and mentally that matches Floyd on that list is Bernard Hopkins. Sweet Pea I'd give a shot merely because its an ATG and if he's not on crack and trains hard for the fight he could give Floyd hell. But I'd still give Floyd the ddge because Pea was past it. No he didnt. He won a close decision. And again no bearing on the fact that he is now a completely different fighter then he was then. Bigger, smarter, physically more imposing. Not 24 ****ing years old with a torn rotator cuff lol!
1 - I am talking about accomplished, in the sense that Floyd was very technically accomplished as soon as he rose to world title level prominence. By the time he fought JL Castillo, he had been a world champion for FOUR YEARS, had already dominated world level guys like Corrales and Hernandez, and had demonstrated a p4p-worthy skillset and outstanding athleticism. Sorry, I don't believe he improved drastically after this, he merely adapted/evolved into a slightly different fighter due to weight and age changes. 2 - 24 years old is not a "young kid". 3- Castillo was not a "beast". You really need to stop inventing fairytales to suit your agenda. And? Like I said, Floyd is one of that rare breed like RJJ and SRL who was good in his early-mid 20s as he ever was. Don't be fooled by one stroll in the park against a cherrypicked punchbag. :nono Floyd's peak was 130. Nah. He is different, but not 'better'. The superfeather Floyd has better speed and power. He could put people away, not just settle for UDs. The Floyd of 09-10 has changed and is still very effective, but he is not better. Come on man, be serious now. A 38 year old rusty Shane Mosley is a million miles away from the 28 year old physical phenom Mosley who beat Oscar first time out. That Shane would've thrown Floyd around like an empty tracksuit. :deal Exactly my point. Floyd went 1-1 with a very good, but not great, fighter. It's all very well thinking about individual hypothetical h2h's here, but that's not what Oscar did. He went out and fought all of these guys within a few years. Reality is very different from a series of separate, individual hypotheticals. If Floyd was forced to go through the run of fights that Oscar had over a few years in reality, he'd have come up against a multitude of problems and would have incurred losses, like Oscar did. How do I put this so someone so dense can understand it??? PACQUIAO DIDN'T HAVE A RIGHT HAND IN 2003-5. HE IS NOW A TWO-HANDED FIGHTER. IN WHAT UNIVERSE DOES THAT NOT MAKE A BIG, BIG DIFFERENCE TO A FIGHTER????!?!??!? Jesus Christ. :nut In addition to that *very obvious* and significant improvement, his footwork and movement are now much, much better, which means his defence is better, and his counterpunching is now much sharper, as Cotto and Margarito would testify. And if you think Pac-JMM II was an "ass-kicking", I suggest you die. I scored it 114-114, nowhere even close to any sort of "ass-kicking". Sergio Mora is C-class. Shane Mosley used to be A-class. A prime Shane Mosley would have caught him and beat him down, irrespective of any perceived stylistic disadvantage. Floyd beat Shane because his defence was infinitely better than Margarito, not because Floyd is bigger or stronger than Margarito. The punches which were wearing Margarito down all night were not connecting with Floyd (except in the spaghetti-legged second round, of course). The Shane Mosley of 2000 has a fantastic chance of beating Floyd. His speed, power and workrate would be horrible for Floyd to cope with at 147. DLH's jab gave Floyd problems. That cannot be denied or hidden from. Quartey has a better jab than Oscar did, IMO. Therefore, it's illogical to say Floyd beats Quartey with any confidence. Both the Pea of '97 and the Hopkins of '04 defeat Floyd conclusively. Conclusively. Pea would always be a stylistic nightmare for Floyd, and Hopkins? I don't even need to explain that one. Easy. Nah. 115-113 JLC all day. I had the rematch to Floyd by 4. So all in all, Floyd beat JLC by 2 points over 24 rounds... and this is the guy that would emerge undefeated from fighting Tito, Mosley twice, Quartey, etc.... He is not a better fighter. Merely a bigger, slightly different one. And he went 1-1 with Castillo, so he would not keep a zero from fighting so many better fighters than JLC. :smoke
Meaningless. So had Pacquiao. Yet you would say Pacquiao improved and Floyd didnt. Meaningless bias from you nothing more. His size in strength is plainly there. Who the size of Mosley was Mayweather walking down and muscling at 130? Yes it is. There are few 24 year old champions today. Best lightweight of his era = beast. Your biased opinion nothing more. I can guage skill and athleticism without the need to boxrec it. You know when a fighter is at his physical prime. For instance Ali's schooling of Cleveland Williams is considered by many to be ali's peak even though Williams was not a great opponent. No. I dont think so. I feel the Floyd of the arturo Gatti fight was him at the peak of his powers. Basically you are saying Floyd hit prime at 130 and has gone down hill since. Dont want to ruin your argument more then you already have. He also got hit far more and was not as defensively sound. For instance the Emmanuel Augustus and JEsus Chavez fights. Technically Floyd has improved. Strength wise he has improved dramatically. You wont see anyone do Floyd like Castillo did because floyd is not the smaller man anymore. Smaller opponents. Means nothing. Even those were based on accumulation. Floyd has few one punch KO victories. Overrated. Forrest showed how much of a physical phenom Mosley was. Not. Same way he threw forrest around. Actually Floyd went 2-0. Your bias does not change the judges scoring. ANd its laughable that you would say that considering the fight could have gone either way. Oh and FLoyd was injured and moving up for the first time aswell. And lost to most of them. Meaningless in terms of standing in boxing. oscar is not as good a boxer as floyd. Nor does he have the stamina or boxing acumen. Roach actually said he developed Manny into a right handed fighter before he fought Marquez. Still got his ass kicked. :good I've watched his fights back to back against Morales and Marquez, then watched his fights with Cotto and Margarito. In reality instead of facing ATG right hand dominate fighters who were elite boxers and counter punchers, he is fighting plodders, and guys with shuddy defenses. Could fool most but not if you look at his opposition. Pacquiao was turned into a cyclops. Its a grade A ass whipping. Name one elite boxer Shane Mosley has ever beaten who didnt try to stand and trade? [ Never said anything of the sort. Not really. Shane's always struggled with boxers. The same Mosley that beat Oscar got slapped around by Forrest. Floyd was always too technically superior. You are literally banking on Mosleys athleticism carrying him through. And considering Mayweather is an elite athlete. Mosley really has no advantage. ONly thing I can see is if Mosley could hurt Mayweather he could end it. But Mayweather would not stand and trade with Mosley of 2000. ANd box him to a comfortable decision. Until he figured it out and Floyd rendered it useless. Something he do to Quartey, and Quartey would have no other weapons to fall back on. Nor the size and weight advantage Oscar had. Pea of 97 was on crack and struggling with much more inferior fighters to Floyd. Floyd edges it. Floyd and Hopkins the weight drained verison Oscar was fighting fight even for most of the fight, but Hopkins pulls ahead in the end. <Meaningless. The judge saw different and so did I. Bigger and stronger. While keeping most of his speed and a drastically better defense and boxing intellect. Dangerous fighter. Hopkins esq.
You guys are making it too complicated, when you can keep it simple: If a small, old Corley and a decrepit, shot to **** Shane can put you on ***** street with one shot, Trinidad can knock you the **** out and most likely would. So can a young Oscar and a young Shane. Is PBF an ATG? Yep. Does he walk thru that minefield of other ATG's without taking a beating at some point? HIGHLY unlikely. And we'll never know for sure, because PBF would rather have you talking about woulda coulda shoulda than getting in there and going for the glory like Oscar did.
Trinidad was dropped by David Reid and Fernando Vargas. I guess Mayweather beats him easy. atsch Floyd called Mosley out in 2000 and 2006. Both times Mosley rejected him. Floyd chased Oscar and Mosley down beat them and was the smaller man in doing so.
Dude, please follow the timelines on these fighters. I gathered the boxrec links for you. Please use them. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=008253&cat=boxer http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9047&cat=boxer
