I just saw toney vs holyfield on espn classic and toney performance was phenomenal,a classic, if you want to look at a master in boxing toney is the last one,you will not see a fighter like toney for a long time, the way he slips punches, rolls with them, bends forward and avoids a left hook, unlike floyd and hopkins who relies on their legs moving side to side and back peddlaling, toney instead stays right in the pocket just right in front of the opponent no matter how big they are..

when you think about it toney went 24 rounds against samuel peters and trust me peter hits hard he knock out legitimate heavyweight with one punch,he put wlad on his ass and many others, there's no way in hell hopkins would be able to survive 12 rounds with peters,I've never seen toney pulling a ***** move ala hopkins, so my vote goes for toney hands down.

and remember toney has been doing the opposite of hopkins, he's been fighting bigger guys for a long time and had stood his ground, lack of discipline and bad eating habits have impacted his career, but when you compare both fightes talent toney is the real THROWBACK,OLD SCHOOL,FIGHTER. wikipidia should have toney's picture right next to the word.

Hopkins is a greater fighter than Toney but Toney's skills are really amazing

His fight against Jirov is one of my favorites ever if not my favorite

I love watching both. They are special in their own ways. But yeah, watching Toney do his thing is simply amazing. He is the definition of the "sweet science".

I still laugh at people who think Calzaghe could beat a PRIME Toney at 168. Yeah right.

Toney by a mile. I think the way he slips and rolls punches whilst standing in front of his opponent is class. More entertaining to watch than Bernard's holding and grappling. But Bernard is more professional in terms of dieting and lifestyle.

Hopkins has the edge if you count staying in shape and taking care of your body as part of being old school. Other than that, they are pretty even.

James Toney shits all over Hopkins.
when did you ever see Toney fouling, pulling ***** moves or complaining to the ref? Never. He's as disciplined inside the ring as he is indisciplined out of it. Toney is a bundle of contradictions in many ways.
Like you say, how many of the great middles and super middles could you see going up and going toe to toe with a big powerful guy like Peters for 24 rounds? Hopkins? Hagler? Monzon? Gimme a break.
    Toney is one tough mother****er.

    Toney, easily!

Toney can fight in the pocket like few i've seen in recent years. He fought everyone. And fought 5 - 6 times a year.

i would of never thought james toney would of fought evander holyfield...it's almost a false fight...almost an exibition. 2 of the best cruiserwieght performers in that fight.

the handspeed that toney had was incredibly for his age and wieght. toney byrd was a big probable fight on the horizon.. sadly didnt come off. i thought it would of been a good match. byrd looked amazing against guys of similar hieght or stature to him. tua was possibly byrds best victory.

anyways cant cry about spoilt milk. they are almost swapping wieght divisions now lol.

toney was a marvel his best performance is a real pickem
barkley- reason why you shouldnt try to outmuscle him best display of counterpunching i have seen. not just counterpunching but mixing them up with combo's aswell.

jirov- the song by damien marley fits it perfectly..."the master has come back". after being on the undercard route for a few years he comes back to beat the most dominant cruiserwieght at the time, jirovs workrate was his undoing as he tried to outwork toney. which gave toney more opertunities to counter and outhustle him.

peter I- i felt peter was just too big and powerful for toney to bully...but toney did amazingly well the left hook combo was his main weapon. he went to the body and should of got the win.

    holyfeild- reasons above.
