If you're talking 'now'. Then yes, GSP. But I don't think Dana has any concept of how big Gretzky was outside of Canada in his prime.
Come on there's no debate to be had here you biased hockey fans. (i'm a hockey fan too btw) There's no way Gretzky is more popular worldwide than GSP. Same way there's no doubt that Gretzky is by far more popular in North America. Even in the southern US i'm sure half the people wouldn't even know Gretzky's first name.
Lets not get this twisted. Pele is one of the most famous players in the biggest sport in the world. The biggest sport by a giant distance. So much bigger than Ice Hockey its not comparable.
less than 5% off the this country would know GSP and same with Gretzky. I bet I know who has got more money.
Ive never watched a hockey game in my whole life, idont come from a hockey playing nation, and i couldnt give a **** about the game (except highlight reels of the fights)...and even i know this is Gretzky.
Well I googled the 10 most famous athletes of all time and instead got the greatest athletes of all time and I kid you not that Gretzky (5) was rated higher than Pele (12). (Ali was 4th) That said the list was biased towards north american athletes so I wouldn't put too much stock in it. http://www.the-top-tens.com/lists/greatest-athletes-of-all-time.asp Point being, I'll give you that Pele is better known throughout the world than Gretzky, but Gretzky belongs in the near top eshleons of name recognision certainly Jordan, Ali, Woods, Pele, and perhaps Beckham are in a league of their own, but just below them you'd have names which would include his. And there's no way in hell GSP is anywhere near that level of recognision, it would be like comparing Anderson Silva to Maradona.
On the Pele thing, Pele is one of the biggest atheletes in the worlds biggest sport which has litterally billions of followers. Gretzky is not close. GSP in anywhere out of North America/Nothern Europe would be more well known.
Depends on the age group. Gretzky is definitely overall more known. People heard his name. GSP not so much. If you're don't watch MMA, you probably don't know who GSP is. Even if you don't watch hokey you heard of Gretzky. I think Russia and Canada in their own right will take care of this argument, because I promise you anyone over age of 25 KNOW and WATCHED Gretzky play. GSP is NOT as well known as you guys seem to think.
You really don't know what you're talking about. Google this for yourself and see what comes up. As far as Northern Europe goes, no way is GSP bigger than Gretzky, many hockey nations are northern European and in that context Gretzky wins hands down. Czech republic, Norway, Sweden, Slovakia, Russia, and on and on it goes.. If you said Brazil or places like that you would have some credibility but not northern Europe. In North America when Gretzky was traded to Los Angles he's credited with helping create much of the NHL in the southern U.S. I think that's a bit of a stretch but not as much as one might think. Hockey itself is still bigger than the UFC. They figure the UFC is worth about a billion dollars, and the NHL would be worth about 3-4 Billion collectively. In Canada where the UFC is huge, they sell out when they come once every few months, while each hockey team plays 82 games and there are 30 teams, and league attendance is probably at about 70% of capacity, so do the math. when i do the math I get about 15,000 average per game * 30 teams * 42 home games gets me about 18-19M people who pay to watch hockey a year. The UFC probably gets less than 1/2 million.
